| I have heard a whisper that he wants to take part in the RL sprint races to prove people are wrong who say his pace has gone.
If he does take part ,instead of a stop watch to time him they will have to use a Calendar.

wellens was due to run a leg of the Marathon torch relay, but the organisers have had to cancel him as they need the torch in 60 days time.

That would make a good chant, that. To the tune of "Where's your mother gone?" or whatever it is.

| When George outran him, I said to a friend at the match that George was thinking about retiring last year, and is definitely retiring this year because his pace is starting to drop off.
What does that say about Wellens?
He has become a pitiful figure, which is a shame, because we need a strong "hate" figure at Saints, in the way that they have Tomkins.
Just doesn't feel right, feeling sorry for them.
As for the V's - So what? We're not as petty/touchy as certain other fans, so I don't expect to see anything done about it.
"Wellens. What's the score?" - No mate, it's more than 2.

| Said a few years ago he should have been moved to centre and they should have worked on a long term replacement.
The top three qualities in a fullback are (not necessarily in order): bravery, game sense and speed. All are essential at SL level. The latter has always been his weakest point but has now become a major issue.

| Wellens actually said in the local paper, prior to the Magic Weekend that as a Man City fan he didnt want to upset Eammon McManus or Mike Rush (both Man Utd fans) too much with the bragging rights as he was hoping to negotiate a new contract!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for not having a hate figure at Saints - look no further than LMS. After last night's game, I'll certainly have no trouble with that one!!!

| My missus came with me on Sunday and she very rarely goes to games, as soon as she saw Carmont and Finch beat wellens she said "is that Bloke at the back for stains, carrying a fridge on his back, as my dead grannie moves quicker"
Give him a 10 year contract i say !

| As great as Wellens was and give him his due he was a very good player, but a full back that gets left for pace by David Vialeki and Gareth Hock should not be playing. Even for Carmonts try he was nowhere near stopping him. I hope they give him another contract as at the moment he is a big weakness.

| Quote: dany1979 "Despite him being a Saints player i have actually had a lot of respect for Paul Wellens since he made a name for himself in Superleague. He's always been solid and always comes accross as a pretty decent person when interviewed, he was certanly honest in his post match interview earlier in saying that Wigan are just better than everyone else at the moment, its hard to argue with that.
However whilst some of his team mates that were part of a great Saints team a few years back have moved on, Wellens has remained and looks like a lost figure these days who seems more intent on chatting to the referee than encouraging his team mates. I was suprised that he did not retire last season and even as a Wigan fan its kind of sad to see a good player be so cruelly exposed as he was (yet again) today.
I thought the Saints dressing room at half-time was very insightful into the current problems at Saints as was the body language of the Saints players when Wigan scored their second try - they just looked devoid of all ideas and like Wigan before Madge arrived they look to have a real leadership issue.
Time to retire Paul.'"
As a Saints fan I think that's a really fair post. Can't disagree with any of it and I think you'll find the sensible and objective Saints speccies (yes there are some of us) would concur 100%.

He wasn't on camera when he did it. Happened plenty of times since I've been going to rugby league matches. Phil Ford was particularly fond of it! Sam Tomkins just picked the wrong time to do it as a camera was on him and it was in a showpiece game on national TV and faced the consequences

At least he had the class to admit that the Pie Gobblers are clearly better than the rest at the moment but other than that a poor game yesterday against a side that were on fire.
