| Quote: sally cinnamon "I thought Mike Gregory's book was interesting along those lines as well.
I got the impression Gregory had the same sort of ideas of building a club identity and Wigan culture built around work ethic (Gregory called it 'rip and tear') that Maguire ended up bringing in, but Gregory had the shadow of Maurice hanging over him deciding on who he wanted in the club personnel and that constrained Gregory.
Whether Gregory would have been as good a coach in the long run as Maguire sadly we will never know but I thought he made a bright start to his coaching career and I thought he had the respect of the players and had the right ideas, and actually Gregory's departure from Wigan started off a steep dip in Wigan's fortunes.'"
Just read in today's paper that Russell Crowe is favourite to play Mike Gregory in a new movie about his life.

Classic non story. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the reality that a man who thinks the book would make a good film going to give Crowe a copy of the book as a present? Not exactly time to start booking the DW for a premiere is it?

| Just finished reading Terry Newtons book. Great read, Some funny story's that had me in stitches and a great insight into his life, the decisions he made and what went on at Wigan during a pretty crap time on the field! Reading the last part was pretty difficult to take in considering what went on to happen and it's made me feel even more strongly about what a true legend he was.
Next up I've got Radlinski's book, and I'm hoping that Graeme West's will turn up over Christmas.

| Quote: McClennan "If you want something about the history of the game, look for [iRugby's Great Split[/i by Tony Collins which about how the game broke from rugby union. It can be heavy going but is very interesting.'"
If you like RL history, The Rugby Rebellion by Sean Fagan is a very detailed book of the RU/RL split in Australia in 1908. Excellent piece of reading.

What is it with these biopics about rugby players?
What next Eddie Murphy is Martin Offiah?
Clive Owen is Paul Sculthorpe?
A film of Leeds Rhinos 2011 season with Al Pacino as Brian McDermott?

| Ray Price
Steve Mortimer
Dean Bell
Dave Hadfield (the one following his walk through RL country) all good reads. Price played RU for Aus before going to Parramatta gives an insight into the two codes in Aus.
I was dissapointed with the Barrie Mc book not much content. If you are that way inclined Stand up and fight about Munsters victory over the all blacks in 1978 is a decent read.

| Ingas book is a good read, particularly with reference to his first training encounter with Shaun Edwards.

| Rugby's Class War by David Hinchliffe (ex?) M.P. is a great book if you can track a copy down. Very revealing book; whose strap-line of "Bans, boot money and parliamentry battles" sets the scene.
Doug Laughton's book is short but entertaining.
Wayne Bennett's books are enlightening into the man and his methods.
Fatty: Strife and Times of Paul Vautin is very funny, particularly his rather non-flattering tales of St Helens, for fans from that era.
There is a quite interesting pick-me-up-for-a-glance Where Are They Now book from the Yorkshire Press(?) that tracks down players from the, mostly 80's and 90's that is fairly recent but I never see mentioned.
Auto(sic)-biographies from players tend to be a bit dull by the end of the book but if anything Aussie player's write better obes as they seem more "media" polished.

| Quote: the flying biscuit ""The Forbidden Game",
its one of the best books I've ever read....
It tells the Tale of the great Jean Galia and the Rise of French Rugby League and then how the Nazi controlled Vichy Government banned the sport to stop it overtaking rugby union....
I read it while on holiday in Canet which added a real feel to the book as we had been to many of the villages and towns where some of those early french rugby League "rebels" grew up....
you would not support France in this weekends Union final if you ever read the book...in fact you wouldnt give the game your time of day at all.'"
Often thought that if a good film was to be made featuring RL this would be the story to tell. Someone really should give Russell Crowe a copy of this book..
