Madge won the league in his first season though, it has taken Smith more than that. The turn around with Madge was instant.
Madge is wanted in the NRL. Smith isn't.'"
when smith came to wire we were dead last you have to put that into considerdartion he won the cup in his first season which was our first for over 30 years took us from 10th to 3rd and a cup in his second now he has finished 1st when maguire came wigan were finishing around 4th anyway but you cant call between the two like the roby vs monaghan debate we will never get the answer

| Madge brought a team that was winning nothing to win some of the gretaest titles and that was with a team that had won nothing for the past 'few' years, there were no new signings so it obviously shows madge can bring the best out of any player.

| So looking forward to next season -
Tony Smith v Shaun Wane (If he is promoted up to head coach)
Who wins that one ?

| Pretty stupid thread. Both brilliant coaches and the best two in SL by a mile. Obviously Wiganers will say Madge and Wire will say Smith.
On another note, it's Maguire not McGuire. If you can't spell it at least say Madge

| i think vadge has more of a killer instinct, perhaps something that may well have benifited the setup at england. smith is a man manager and gets the best out of his team in other ways. i think this is refelected in the two teams style of play.
both best in SL by a mile, but totally different in style and approach. imagine the team performance if you could create some freaky hybrid coach?

In a fight?
Wane all the way, he'd rip him a new one in seconds.

| they were relegated, and would've been relegated for the 3 years previously under all the other coaches, however he also got them winning games, he got them to win the old NFP and promoted then got them competitive upon their return to the top flight, which then got him a job at leeds.
Improvement, its his MO in life.

| I don't think Madge does coach 'exciting rugby' that's different to saying you don't play it, in the same vein Smith doesn't do anything in attack, zero, he said that at a fans forum he only works on defence and lets the players come up with the plays in attack
Wire fans will say Smith all day long and for good reason, he took a side which was more or less the same side both Cullen and Lowes under achieved with and turned them in to the league leaders, he's won us Silverware that alluded us for years and the fans absolutely adore him, he's fair and honest and a great sportsman.
Wigan fans will say Madge but obviously this is were i will sound biased, Madge took over a sleeping giant, the numero uno sleeping giant but he had a lot more at his disposal, you have the best training facilities, play in the biggest stadium, most fans, best youth system, all Wigan needed was a shot in the arm, if Smith had taken over Wigan instead of Wire i think you'd have won the same amount of trophies that Madge managed, the job in hand wasn't as big as the Wire job.
Both great coaches
And I'll add a final point to the 'NO CLUBS IN THE NRL COME FOR SMITH' comments
Smith has taken up residency here and has gone on record saying he has no interest in going back to Aus, the agents and club owners are aware of this, besides how do you know he hasn't been approached? Are you privy to all his communication?

If a coach of Smiths stature was approached by an NRL club you WOULD hear about it, even you know that.

Why would you, not all signings and enquires are public knowledge, especially when the said party isn't interested.
