| Quote: DaveO "Isn't there a very good winger in the U20's? If so should we be up in arms he's not in the side over Goulding who could not catch to save his life tonight despite getting hands on the ball first for two of the early Les Cats tries?
Most people don't have the chance to watch the U20's so wouldn't know anyway whether a winger or half back from there is any better than either player. Noble got slagged off for dropping young players who had done exceptionally in the first team when his hand had been forced to play them.
As to Finch, we were chasing the game after 18 mins and were sh 1 t all over the park. It wasn't his fault and anyone who puts most of the blame at his door is deluding themselves about how bad the rest of them were.'"
We have been found out with regards to high bombs to our wingers / full back and the opposition have taken full advantage:
Tonight - Goulding.
Leeds - Tomkins.
Wire - Charnley.
Hudds - Roberts.
Salford - Tomkins.

23997_1287161421.jpg
Great game of rugby league. Fantastic atmosphere, Wigan were breathtaking and dominant in all areas for the first 25 minutes, coupled with us making alot of dumb mistakes, then fortunately they brought McIlorum on which helped us back into the game. I thought some of the tries we scored to get us within two we're out of this world stuff. Towards the end we had to force it a little and we had a few things go wrong, i.e Monas kick on the first for King and Solomona going off who was causing havoc. Wigan were clinical in their eventual execution of us. Proud of Wire today and gave us a little glimpse to the future. Silverwood was awful as per, but I expect no less. Tomkins is a world class player and by far the best english player in SL. Wigan are a champion side and would be a worthy winner of taking our title as challenge cup. Good luck over the next month and a bit.
:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_23997.jpg |

I think Ryan King is the winger you're thinking of. Charnley would be next in line I think but there's no reason why King shouldn't get a call up. If you don't play well you lose your place, both Charnley and Roberts have found that out and I think next week Goulding should discover that too.
I agree there's no point blaming Finch for the defeat because it was a team effort in doing that badly. The only thing that does concern me with Finch is that he wouldn't be the only Aussie to come over here and struggle in his first season. How long does he get given to fit into the side? Mellor must at least be considered as competition because although Finch is a proven player in the NRL, it doesn't make sense to hold back a promising young player whilst waiting for an established player to pick up some form for a few months. I'm not writing off Finch, I just think that if he hasn't improved in a couple of weeks he has to be dropped if someone else is in form.

It's OK saying this and ideally I agree but we can't put too many inexperienced player in the side. I think Madge and Wane need to take as much flak for tonight as the players. I am sure such a thought is very unfashionable but even with the loss of Piggy and Gleeson they have other options as to how to play the experienced players such as TL at 9 to give MM (cracking player IMO) a rest and vary it all.
For me its getting to the stage where its just the coaching staff are just being stubborn not switching it around. Moving Sam form 1 and interchanging TL with MM is not some sort of admission they got it wrong but a smart move recognising the current formation is not working.

Barrett took about a month to six weeks to settle in and I think that Finch deserves at least that but if the rest of the team carry on like this it would be stupid to hang him for the rest of the sides ineptitude if al the rest of them do not improve.

I'd agree with this, I watched the season review of last year a few weeks ago I'd forgotten how many tries we scored from sam's short kicking game at the start of last year. He's a very good fullback, but I think he is just that bit more effective at 6. Also spelling tommy and McIllorum at 9 would be a huge plus, look at McIllorums performance in the gf, I think he outplayed riddell in that game! I think although we are missing Riddell, Deacon is the one that, at the moment, we are missing the most.

For me tonight the whole team was J Arthur Rank! It was embarrassing. I have never done the Wigan Walk but I was tempted with 20 minutes to go! For what it is worth and i know others will have a go but, Tommy is a number 9 end of he is never a 7. His kicking game is average at least. Sam is a 6 not a 1. Finch, well currently he is David Vaeliki in disguise and it says it all when we really need Paul Deacon back (because we do). the jury is out on Lima and Hoffman, well he was ok until tonight. Micky mac, tries hard but is not good enough as a starting number 9.

The person we miss the most is IMO Gleeson because we need not miss Piggy if TL got a run at 9. We have not got a centre to replace Gleeson and I think there is a possibility Goulding or whoever is on that wing won't be 2nd top try scorer this season and will look very poor in defence without a more experienced centre .

Can't argue too much with this guy !
Hoffman looks as if he will make it but with Lima I am not sure.
Tommy is indeed an enigma. Where to put him ? Not big enough for an hooker and not creative enough for a 6 or 7.
I was also opposed to signing Deacon, but have 'eaten my hat' over this one. The fact remains though, that Deacons days of playing are well overdue. Does this not show our weaknesses on it's own ?
We are playing too many players out of position. Our coach is probably going elsewhere. The secrecy over the Gleeson issue.
As WW1 Royal Navy Admiral of the Fleet, Jackie Fisher stated, "there's something wrong with our bloody ships !"

And how many tries did we score via a high kick to the wing for Pat?, obviously none so far.
The gleeson loss is the greatest IMO we need an attacking strike centre, I personally want Joel there. Can't see what everyone is raving about Marsh for from what I've seen. To me it's a case of the emperors new clothes!!!
I have no doubt Finch will come good, wrongly getting the flack at the mo, much easier to slot into a side if you are the sole change but this ain't the case. He isn't the reason we lost on Friday is he?
Oh and Sam to 6, while he may make a fine FB at the moment he is wasted there, taking in the high ball and running into the oncoming line, we need his creativity in the halves

| i personally think its the combination ofboth finch and hoffman, hoffman has been found out in defence alot of the last few games, in face most of the tries are either on the right wing, or where hoffman should be in the line, this combined with finch, being less than useless at the moment, (if hes not fit he should not puthis hand up to play and the coach shouldnt pick him regardless) once catalan knew that they could make the breaks between hoffman and finch they attacked there all night.
