Batley v Wigan - Early Round Challenge Cup Game

At Central Park,

Stood under the Popular Stand with 3-4k others watching on a Big Screen (plonked on the centre spot) borrowed from Arsenal FC.

My greatest memories? I'm old enough to remember the glory days at CP but I've never been prouder to be Wigan fan than when the club was desperately battling relegation and the fans rallied behind the team in numbers that hadn't been seen at Wigan in the modern era.

Everyone in RL knows that no other club's fans would have done that. I'm sure we'll win lots more trophies in the years to come but for me I don't think that period of loyalty and support to the club will ever be surpassed. Those are my greatest memories, not of the team, or even the club, but of Wigan fans rallying to an apparently lost cause in massive numbers while the rest of RL looked on in wonder.

I'm sure lots of us will be thinking back to that dark time on Sunday with pride, and with sheer joy at where the club now finds itself. Bring it on!

So true! 2005 and 2006 brought us too many poor results to remember, the way the fans got behind the club was amazing and I don't think it would happen at any other club. Wire were down the bottom and threw season tickets on the pitch. Saints were at the top and attendances still were not as high as ours. Leeds have had one year not winning the league and suddenly a couple of thousand fans are choosing not to go.

Do Wigan fans do anything other than pat themselves on the back over their support? sleepy.gif

Lets talk about the p!ss poor crowds you got when you were relegated instead.

Go on then, tell us what Wigan average crowd was for that season, and then tell us how it compared with ALL the other clubs particularly the ones in the first division.

The last match at CP was awesome. Very glad to be there.

The Brian Carney tackle on Sullivan that saved the game at Stains. It looked like he'd NO chance of stopping him, but he did. Easy enough to find on YouTube if you need reminding.

The Farrell / Renouf / Radlinski try-scoring move that had us 1 point behind at full time with the kick to come against Bradford. Think that was in 2000, if memory serves. Again, YouTube for the win.

And the 2007 play-off was an unbelievable comeback.

Let's also remember the Farrell "Phantom of the Opera" performance against Leeds. It was performances like that that crowned him the greatest player Super League has ever seen, even in the eyes of the Stains-loving duo Eddie & Stevo.

Playing at Central Park before the first team is something i will never forget, i must of been about 12years old and we were playing on a full size pitch against Halton Hornets.

I can still remember walking out of the tunnel at Central Park absolutley bricking it and our best player Terry Newton was missing that day as he had trials for the town team.

Still got the match on video.

Also remember St.Marys primary school allowing the class to go down to Central Park to wish the team good luck before they set off for Wembley, a few days later a member of the team would pop into class with the Challenge Cup...usually Shaun Edwards.

v Leeds JPS Trophy at Elland Rd - first thing I'd ever seen Wigan win after my Dad telling me all about the glory years in the 50's and 60's
V Hull KR at CC Semi Final at Elland Rd - after the Widnes final I though it would be ages before we got back to Wembley again
v Manly - enough said
v Saints at Edinburgh - first thing my kids had seen Wigan win after me telling them all about the glory days in the 80's and 90's
v Saints at OT 2010
