There's no law says we have to have it. Saints and Hull, and even London now, don't have Americanised nicknames.
But they do differentiate RL teams from any other. If you hear a snippet of news or radio report about the Harlequins, or Bradford, or Huddersfield, you can't be certain which sport they are talking about, and 'Warriors' is certainly a tag which separates us from the wendyballers.'"
But not RU. If I read a headline about the "Warriors" I don't know if it's Worcester or Wigan.'"
when are worcester ever mentioned on tv for you to be confused?? even when they were in premiership nobody cared about them lol

IL did ask for a show of hands on the Warriors name at the very first fans forum and it was a 50
I remember that show of hands at the very first forum and I also was surprised. IL agreed he also didn't like the Warrior name and was prepared to drop it but as the show of hands was 50:50 he left it.
Its like they say 'it's what your used to' it will always be Wigan RL to me as that's what I was brought up with but the rebranding with SL named us Warriors and for the kids its great I guess.
If there was major rebranding again now everyone would complain and those liking Warriors would want it changing back.
hey hoy!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!
IIRC your chap stuck his hand up for Warriors that night.

| We're in a similar position at Leyth in that a lot of people (including myself at the time) wanted a return to being plain old Leigh RLFC but the club did a lot of research and survey's in to it and ended up keeping the name. Being an 'outsider' and dealing with a pretty wide spectrum of people who come in to contact with Wigan RL rather than what it's fair to say is a hardcore on here, you'd be genuinely surprised at how much the 'Warriors' name is used. Like it or not, the blanket coverage of the Premier League means that general sports fans are often recognising 'Wigan' to read 'Latics', so it certainly does provide a useful tool in differentiating between the two.

| I don't understand why 'warriors' is needed to 'attract young support'
We weren't warriors when I was 10, and they had no trouble attracting me or my mates.

Actually Stenhousemuir FC have been known as the warriors for over 100years!

In a way it is - the younger generation. The whole Warriors tag attracts youngsters, it differentiates us from the puffball team.
IMHO I couldn't care if it was Warriors or RLFC - We are Wigan and we are the champions and long may it continue.

So your saying the youngsters who didn't know the WIgan RL era don't call the team 'Warriors'? That all the advertisements/posters etc don't attract the youngsters? Of course it does. Fact is, people who didn't know the Wigan RL era will only know us as Wigan Warriors. The name won't change and me and you could sit here til the bleeding cows came home debating whether it does or does not attract youngsters.
Pathetic thread, and probably the most pointless thread of the year.

They could know the team as the "martians" but they didn't start watching them because they're called the "martians," they started watching them because they're their local RL team.

| Could have been worse could have been Wigan White Sox or Wigan Wizards.
Halifax (Blue Sox), and Hull (Sharks) soon realised that it was a gimmick too far and quickly reverted back to their original names.
I never refer to my club as Warrors and I never have.
In conversation it's either Wigan Rugby, Wigan RL or just Wigan. In fact I have cringed in the past when being asked if Im going to watch the 'Warriors'.
