I don't think he is anything more than a solid pro. Tonight though I think Powell is the problem. He looks tired and we need some bodies back to give him a rest. Powell's distribution has been poor often putting Smith in a difficult situation as he's not getting good ball.

Smith needs to step up and take control and not go missing Wigan need a leader not someone who is playing hide and seek. The only reason he has ever been an international is because he wears a Wigan shirt now it's time he started playing like a Wigan player

Bateman was the reason we won tonight. Smith had a good last 15 but we should have had that game closed out long before that given the field position we had.

I have to hand it to Smith. I was fuming with his first half performance but he really got it together after the break. We still need far more from him and he can't control a game for his life at the moment without those pivots of Tomkins, Williams and Lockers round him but he showed plenty of guts to dig it out.

He's crying out to fade back in to the background when those lads are back and to get back to just doing the basics without any heat on him. I suppose a Wigan scrum half should produce more but he plays within his limits around better players and completes a solid job.

Matty Smith is currently the worst half back in the league. He is a player who has the experience to direct his players and put himself in positions that allow him to manage the game better however apart from 2 drop goals, 3 conversions and a try today he was terrible. I think Wigan need a new halfback for next year as he isn't quality enough for you IMO.
John Bateman however was the best player on the pitch and I am looking forward to seeing plenty more from him.

Smith is drowning in expectation at points. He isn't good enough to run games when he's missing his halfback partner, his full back, his hooker and his ball playing loose forward but when he's alongside them he can just do the basics and tick us over.

I don't think I made myself clear, plenty of players in your squad could of also took them opportunities that Matty Smith was presented with. The conversions were not the hardest and the try could have been scored by anyone who was in support. You are missing your spine of your team yes, but Wigan need and can have more than a basic half back. The size of your club and the financial aspect of it could attract much higher quality halfback.

I find the notion that a win should exclude any player from criticism very odd.

Personally I judge on performance not results. I thought we were poor again tonight despite the win. Smith for 60 minutes was shocking. The field position and pressure we built resulted in nothing.

Give we a good performance in a loss over a win and the dross we had to watch today.
