| Quote: nathan_rugby "Played hooker for us since 2014… pretty much the majority of his professional career.
I get he was signed as a scrum half and played there in the academy and a bit for the first team but it was so long ago and so early in his development I don’t think you can refer to it.'"
Why not????
If we get a couple of injuries next season in the HBs who do you think Peet will play at HB if Smith and Field are both out injured?
By your logic Sam Tomkins couldn’t play HB or show skill sets of an HB because virtually all of his professional career has been played at FB.
I’d strongly suggest that SOL and Hock both showed handling skills throughout their professional career that they learned as an HB at schoolboy level.
In 2014 when we played The Roosters SWs choice as starting 7 was Powell albeit he didn’t play due to injury. I suspect SW must have rated Powell as a 7 and even after 7 long long years I don’t think it’s illogical to assume that Powell could and should retain basic core skills of an HB even though he may have lost a bit of pace.

Thanks for your wisdom on that one.

| Thought Powell improved out of sight in 2019, found a running game from somewhere and varied our attack, last year was dreadful though, if Peet can find the '19 version of Powell then I'm fine with that, the '20 version though doesn't bare thinking about

What makes any supporter think that Powell will be released when like other Wigan lads, Farrell and O'loughlin, he is one of the fixtures at the club?

i would say performances
Farrell is still one of the 1st names on the team sheet
o'loughlin was on a different planet to most other players in the Wigan team in terms of rugby ability. Whilst most will admit he probably went on for 2-3 years too long, he still had the ability to win us games
with respect to Powell i dont see him in the same class as either of the other 2

| At 29 years of age and for me not much more than a solid dependable pro I hope 1. he hasn’t been offered any more than a 2 year deal and 2. he’s not a top earner.

| Powell is going nowhere and should be considered for the captains job at Wigan. Everyone who has coached him picks him, he's a model pro well respected by his peers and must be next in line for a testimonial?
He didn't have his best season at Wigan in 2021, but who did? he just appears to be the new scapegoat for some reason and yet he still made 2nd most tackles in Superleague last season.

Nobody can ever question his effort or his solid defensive contribution. However, nobody can ever convince me that he offers anything in attack. He’s truly awful when we have the ball. His distribution is slow and often inaccurate. He’s easily the most predictable 9 in the competition and beyond any doubt for me, we’d improve with a good 9. Look at Roby, McShane, Leeming, Lussick, Clarke, even Houghton and McIllorum are all far better than Powell and offer much more when they’re in possession.
As hard as he works and as good as he is in defence, we need much more from our 9 than Powell has to offer. Has he improved? Yes, but not enough.
