| He's big, he's strong, he's young, fast, agressive and can play the full 80. He tackles a lot and scores tries. Has the odd brain fart in attack. Got in the dream team this season. I reckon he was our 3rd best player over the full season.
If the other forwards are better and keep him out of the 17 the England pack will be hard to beat.

| The first canon shot in the psychological war.
The Aussies aren't kidding anyone. They like their forwards aggressive.

I guess the difference is that Wilkin isn't down under at present but Tomkins is, but I would have thought the difference was obvious.

| Quote Cherry.Pie="Cherry.Pie"I think some people make too much of Tomkins being the most penalised player in Super League. Wigan were the most penalised club in the league and Tomkins played more game time than any other forward at the club. It's not that surprising that he tops the list.
In fact, in terms of penalties conceded per minutes on the field, Fielden and Coley would probably come out worse.
No one seems to mention Jon Wilkin having a problem with a lack of discipline, yet he's conceded more penalties per game than Tomkins. It's simply easier to say Tomkins is the most penalised player so he must be the worst disciplined.
Joel averages about 1.2 penalties per game, which isn't a major concern for a player who generally plays 80 minutes, makes more carries per game than his team mates and was the second top tackler at his club.'"
Made them point on both Leeds and Huddersfield sites during the season when he was labbeled a thug! As expected on the Leeds forum got nothing sensible back just the usual drivel!!
Any team in Super League would snatch our hands off if offered Joel. Problem for them can see him following Lockers and staying here a long time!

It's an interesting question.
If we do well in this tournament, how much will it be down to him, and how much will it be down to the players and their clubs?
Back in the early 90s, I was convinced that the run of good performances we put in against an Australia side containing the likes of Mal Meninga, Brad Fittler and so on - 2 mins from winning the Ashes, almost beating them in the World Cup Final at Wembley etc - was more to do with the bulk of the British side coming from Wigan and having been excellently coached by John Monie than it was anything to do wtih the GB management.
Even if I rated MacNamara as a coach, which I don't, I can't see that he'll have had these lads in his charge anything like long enough to impose his talents on them.

| McNamara is RL's answer to making Steve McLaren the England soccer manager.
(apart from the fact that McLaren we quite successful at club level)
The Aussies get Wayne Bennett, we get McNamara................... great.
