| Class player on the pitch, a bit of a wally off it.
Came across as down to earth, but arrogant at the same time. Strange fella.
(I wish I had a pound for every time he said resassure - I can reassure you Brain that.... blah blah.)

| I remember seeing him and Lee Crooks rolling in the gutters of Kings Cross Sydney on the Australian tour. Not the best advert for GB "stars".
The thing that amused me last night was his opinions of just how close we were to the Aussies when Mal Reilly was in charge and how Schofield hated defensive rugby.
However when Reilly was on the show a few weeks back he said that we would never beat the Aussies until we learned how to defend.

Pretty everybody did his defensive work for him, which probably makes him un qualified to comment on that subject , but then he says we just fell short of beating them because only 6 or 7 players could basically hack it and thenothers fell short , I wonder which group he put himself in ?

To be fair though he did say he had a few disagreements with the style of rugby he was being asked to play by Mal.

| I agree with Rogues, we need to learn how to defend properly. A major reason why McNamara is such a bad choice for the England coaching role.
The amount of soft tries given away in this super league is ridiculous.

| But sadly defenders are underrated in British RL. Lockers is more than just a great defensive LF but the massive contribution he makes in this area doesn't translate in terms of how people rate him. He's "just a very good tackler" is a typical kind of comment from people that don't get the importance of defence (it also ignores other aspects of Sean's game, but that's a different point!).
Many RL fans don't appreciate what a good player Phil Clarke was, to use another LF example, and someone who was heavily biased towards defence. He was an incredibly good defensive player (not sure I've seen anyone better in this country, the guy was an absolute machine and laid the platform for the superb backs Wigan had at the time, by tackling the opposition to a standstill) but to hear many non-Wigan fans speak you'd think the guy was useless.
We just don't rate defence enough. Wigan are "boring" because we are the best defensive unit in SL.
It's a sad indictment of British RL, its fans and the RL press.

| Very very good off the cuff player that Schofield was, he even admitted himself to shortcomings in his ability to stick to a game plan and his defensive issues.
Definitely two sandwiches short of a picnic up top - his inability to recognise that waiting 60 minutes to pick of an interception whilst hiding alongside Wayne Pearce in defence for the remainder of the game is no use to the team as a whole.
His interview last night was worth watching if only to highlight just why he was never part of a successful TEAM. As a coach - file alongside Doug Laughton and Alex Murphy.

| Frank Stanton, Was very clever in what he did knowing full well that in those days defence was just unbelievably strong, i think even i could of scored for fun if i was prepared to do something different
One thing i agree with Schofield on, is the way try to play against the Aus test team, we try to play them at there own game and we dont succeed, The sydney test (Where fielden got laid out) was a great example of GB Being agressive, kicking the aussies to death and throwing the ball around.
The only thing we could not do was back it up and thats where we fall down and the players need to have that more intense competition here in SL

It can be argued that Murphy was a major help, for Wigans tilt for the top and the building bricks that made us the 8 in a row champions of all we surveyed, when he was our coach. It was Murphy who signed Edwards.
Again, Murphy who is arguably the Uks greatest ever RL player and a bit of a mouth gets slagged off .
I didn't hear/see the Schofield interview, but the likes of Schofield and Murphy and many others aren't given the respect due their standing in the game. Far too many slag off some of our greatest players. That's not good.

In my "Rugby League: Where are they now" book he's down as a bricklayer, which is a bit of a shame really. Even if you don't like him, it's a shame that RL wasn't the platform of financial success it should have been (imo) for our players, especially when you compare it to Soft Mick who plays 5 minutes for Grimsby Town FC and never has to do another days work in his life, it just doesn't seem right. As for Garry, he might talk a bit of crap but I grew up watching him and when he pulled on that GB jersey he was magic.
btw I didn't see the programme as I've been away, but it sounds like he stuck true to form. Better on the pitch than off it Garry was.
