| Quote: fleabag "I think since they got rid of contested scrums , scrums have been rather pointless. However, to rid the game of scrums entirely would affect the game in a radical manner, and not just the role of 'the packs' . The whole structure of a team, and the game, would also be changed if that were to happen . Personally, I would like to go back to contested scrums, but I don't think the governing bodies would consider that. 'Elf&Safety' would also do their nuts.'"
Well put, but of course in reply, we get the usual swiping at others and lack of proper debate on a topic about what is a fundamental part of rugby, be it League or Union.

| I'd get rid. Imagine if you had never seen scrums before and introduced them into the game we watched this year. We would all be up in arms at how pointless they are.

I definitely think something should be done rather than simply go back to the way scrums have been performed since the Eighties (thirty seconds rest for the forwards with the ball fed through the legs of a 2nd Rower).
Either get rid and keep as we are now.
Or.... go back to contested scrums where hookers 'hook' and possession becomes more of a lottery. If you watch the Wigan v Hull FC Cup final at least a couple of scrums went against 'head and feed' and it was all part of the game.
Today's scrums are an embarrassment.

But RU scrums are even more of an embarrassment. They are literally ruining the game & I'm an avid RU fan.
Modern RL is a world away from the 85 cup final. Teams might have used it as an on/off tactic back then, but the way the game is now it will mean it becomes another well drilled aspect of the game, like the tackle area has become.
If we introduced scrums then all teams would need proper front rows, or there'd be some serious injuries occurring. Make no mistake, an RU front row would absolutely destroy any RL front row at the scrum - there's no half measures when it comes to this.

| Bringing back competitive scrums is my least favourite option. Yes I'm sure there is lots of skill involved but for the average spectator it is bloody boring. Especially in today's day and age where I imagine the referee would be called upon to continually reset scrums or give penalties as the players fall over, wheel around etc.

| The RFL & SL will follow the NRL's lead on this.
If the NRL re-introduce them so will we.
Should the NRL not re-introduce them neither will we.

Scrap them then, cause today's scrums are about as much use as a button on a sock.

The NRL haven’t stopped the scrums. More flexible with allowing teams to take the scrum to the centre of the pitch if they wish

There are also those who have watched the game for many years who find the same repetitive play of six drives followed by a kick to be boring, especially now with no scrums.
The game is going more and more like boring American Football every season.
What next, Time Outs!

| Bringing the scrums back makes for more open play with the forwards out of the way

What are you on about at all? The two major changes this season both resulted in the ball being play longer, the exact opposite of American Football. I am interested in this six drives and a kick strategy though, being allowed an extra tackle every set could give us a great advantage

It should do, but inevitably it just results in a slightly larger back running the ball in near the scrum. I can't remember the last time a team put a set piece on from a scrum.

Saints scored off one in the 2019 Grand Final. I think the point in scrums is more the brief rest though than any plays a team might do off them.
