Having lived in Atherton as a lad in the 80s I was always amazed at the lack of development work in the local schools etc, Leigh has never really done enough work in the local communities. (No one from Leigh ever came to my primary school, which was 10-15 mins drive from Leigh's ground and the only sport we played was football). Atherton didn't even have an amateur club until a few years ago. If you are going to get anywhere near sustainability in SL terms then you are going to have to do a lot more to build interest in places like Atherton and Tyldesley. Apologies if I'm telling you what you already know!

I Deano you mention living in Atherton in the 80s and what you say may be true about no work done in Atherton to promote the game by Leigh.
In the 50s though Atherton did have an amateur club, the name was Atherton Recs and they played on St Georges School playing fields off Derby St.
A few players of that team I can remember were David McDonald a Scott (who was a keen Wigan supporter) who was my Uncle, Freddie Sale a blacksmith who worked in the same steel fab shop that I served my time in.
Finally another was Don Shawcross a miner who lived on the same estate as me, after the Recs folded he went on to play Rugby (both League and Union for many years). I am pretty certain posters will be on here who rembered Don
The reason I know this is because my Mother used to wash the Atherton Recs shirts every week, she is now 102 years old and still at home. She likes her League when it is on telly, but when Union is on all she can say is "why do they keep falling on top of each other all the time"
Tyldesley also had a team, albeit Astley and Tyldesely Welfare who played in the 50s and 60s. |

| Yea warrington have confirmed early that it will be fringe & u20's players that make up their team so has even priced accordingly. Wigan have indicated you will be sending a strong squad made up of your first team players this year so u might win at LSV for a change  |

Just to clarify we have an agreement with Wigan that you are treating this as a first team friendly and a warm up for the WCC. We had another options and as a new board did not want to play your kids/reserves this year and had another SL club lined up if you could not commit to a strong team.
The a Warrington game is a fringe squad/ U20s hit out for us and Wire hence the price.
For our game we are opening three of the four stands at LSV in anticipation of a 5k plus gate and will obviously have all the associated costs that brings, against Wire we are only opening one stand.
A near full strength Wigan vs Leigh at full strength playing for local pride and the Arthur Thomas memorial trophy (see below) not only makes for a great spectacle this year but hopefully as we develop as a force over the coming years could be an annual local event that we can all look forward to. For those old enough to remember the early 80s we were once looking down on you guys

Clubb
Hughes
Bateman
Powell
Hopkins
Dudson
Pettybourne
Can't see it being stronger than that, Charnley is injured so definitely won't be playing, O'Loughlin only plays in finals now I think we will see Green and Bowen rotated between Sarginson, Hampshire, Powell and Tierney throughout the year with both of them possibly leaving at the end. Hopefully Hopkins will get a game against his old club despite not travelling to florida with the first team. |

which Powell ? despite all the rumours AP and EL are still technically Wigan players. Given that Sam Powell played twice as many games as Rocky last year, will that continue this season, now that (I assume) Williams and Hampshire wont be able to play U19 ?

Hampshire and Williams still qualify at U19. I think 13 or 14 of last years academy winning team still do. |

I meant Sam Powell as I believe Andy has left the club. We do a have a lot of competition in hype halves next year: Green, Smith, Sarginson, Powell, Hampshire, Williams. Possibly a few tough decisions for the coaching staff to make in the future, although I do think this year will be Greens last at Wigan - mutual choice.
