I think saying "clearly" is stretching it a bit there, but I can see why under the current system the video referee had no choice but to award it as a try.
Under the current rules, Lineham would have had to be given as a try too. Thaler would have sent it upstairs as 'try' and Cobb would have awarded it on the basis that there wasn't 100% evidence that he definitely dropped it.
The Peyroux one is a head scratcher, and should see Cobb sent down to the lower leagues next season.
That said, we (Saints) were awful for large periods of the game and looked completely clueless in the 2nd half so it would have been fairly embarrasing for the sport had we got to the Grand Final.

I'm not sure something like that is as embarrassing as important games being decided by idiot match officials.

Does look on the line at 21 seconds. Anybody got a freeze frame picture of the warrington penalty goal.

At the ground the kick looked wide of the post. On the tv highlights even Patton was laughing.

Joe Cobb got his part spot on, it was Thailer who got it wrong. Once it went up as no try, the current rule says there has to be conclusive evidence to overturn the original decision. The footage shows the ball going down towards the line but then is obscured by player's legs. Therefore whist its highly likely it was grounded on the line, there was no definitive shot of it being grounded so the decision could not be overturned.
I had no issues with Gidley's or Lineham's. Had they been scored by their own club, most fans would all have argued that they were legitimate tries.

| Quite correct Cobb is rubbish but under the rules he was right to disalow because there was not 100%proof it was a try , Thaler should not have given Hulls as he can not have been certain the number of times he had to look at it . lets get rid of the refs call and go with the video ref 100%

How can you say that Thaler got it wrong when the replays didn't provide conclusive evidence to the contrary? He made what he thought was the correct decision and THE SYSTEM didn't allow it to be overturned.
Thaler and Cobb were both 'right' but the system isn't a good one FWIW I thought that they were all or should have been given as trys

| We have the same VR system as the NRL. But it seems to work much better there. Why? Partly because they have more camera angles and better technology, for sure.
We went to this system originally because everyone moaned that refs were bottling out of making a decision and just passing everything upstairs before.
For cases where the on-field ref genuinely isn't sure, I don't see why we can't use the RU formulation: "Try: yes or no?". It would overcome the current daft situation where the VR is hamstrung by the onfield decision which was a guess at best anyway.

| How about this for an overhaul of the system. The on field officials call every decision during the game. The video referee can only be used in the following situations:
- Checking touch, touch-in-goal, and dead ball line decisions relating to when the referee has given a try. The referee gives the try and is allowed to ask the VR to check whether the player/ball was out of play, nothing else.
- Any play resulting in an injured player being substituted. The referee calls time off and sends the incident up to the VR, who can only judge whether the player was fouled, nothing else. He may advise the referee to penalise, sin bin or dismiss as fit.
- Each team has a challenge they can use for any call that results in a natural stoppage in play (i.e try, scrum, penalty, turnover, 20m restart etc). They must tell the referee before play has restarted. The referee then calls time-off so the VR can check the call. Where there is doubt, the original call stands. The team can keep challenging if they are proved correct, but lose it once they are incorrect. If the original call stands then a penalty is awarded to the opposition, or the opposition is marched 10m forward if they already had a penalty (to avoid teams challenging for the sake of it).

| There has been some interesting blurring over replays recently that I've never seen before!!
Sky developed the high definition clear zoom replay. How can it be that the two most decisive decisions of the penultimate play off rounds wakey try v Dull and Wigan hand in touch try v Wire, were strangely blurred like I've never seen in a sport ever.
You see clearer images underwater.
Those 2 single incidents made sure that the season stayed open until the final game of the season. I don't necessarily say that is a bad thing, but the fishy goings on at Sky, stinks to high hell....no, I'm not blaming the RFL here.

You must be on to something if you look at the unblurred slow motion of the Flower tackle you clearly see he removed Pattons head, some very smoothly operated CGI make you believe that Flower leaves the pitch and Patton plays on. All these idiots that believe that it was Wigan reduced to 12 men when it was actually Wire that were a man short for the final quarter.
