| This loss doesn't bother me one bit. I can't work out whether it's because the final standings mean nothing or because it changed nothing in the league anyway?
I think losses in a strange way are what high teams need. We were never going to go out for the rest of the season and win every single remaining game, better losing in a nothing game to Bradford than a big match vs saints.

| It was, we were poor all round tonight.....agree Gareth Hock had a shocker, and, for me, one of the turning points in the game was Rhodri Lloyd's missed chance...looking to go under the posts for a six-pointer instead of making sure of the four?
Thought Jack Murphy stood up quite well considering it was his first team debut. Prehaps it was the kick up the backside we needed to iron out any complacency, we'll dust ourselves down, see what happens with injuries and the disciplinary, and prepare for Wakefield.

Good point, especially with Wire losing as well. The CC semi is the big one coming up, and tonight will have shown Waney that some of his plans need changing a bit. I hope.

| Maybe it's just my age, but I still care about coming top of the league & was brassed off that we could have gone 5 points clear & probably tied that up.
Add to that I've developed a terrible record of only getting to go to CC semi's/GF Eliminators which we end up losing - no sooner do I buy tickets than our form starts to take a downwards turn again....
Never been superstitious, but I'm beginning to wonder if I should get some lucky heather.

| Quote: JohnP "Thing was, we had chances enough - Farrell's first break where he passed when he could probably have scored, his second where he sent a perfect pass to Gelling, even Rhodri Lloyd had a decent chance in the second where he decided to try & cut inside to beat the last man rather than running into the enormous gap on the outside. We just kept letting them off the hook.
Add to that Hock being a liability all the way through, playing Lockers as a half when he just isn't, giving Charnley nothing all game & no Sam... And I know Gelling shows potential at times, but to me he's looking like an athlete not a rugby player.
Can only assume Sam was injured - surely if you were going to rest him you'd have done it against Widnes?'"
I agree with all of that. I also can only assume Sam was injured. We have a longer turnaround after this game v Wake so Widnes was the game to rest him if rest is what it was.
I think Gelling is popular with the fans because he busts a gut and shows more heart than quite a few players we have had in the past but I can see where you are coming from with the athlete idea. I am starting to think he is destined for the pack if he has a future in the game. He's big enough.

| Gelling was solid again for me apart from the obvious knock on. Quite surprised to see at times we were a little clueless in attack on some plays whereas normally we are so structured and set up well.
What struck me tonight as the most surprising was Charnley defensively. He's great, even brilliant when in attack but tonight, he was constantly out of position for me defensively, even when Goulding was still on.

I think Gelling's one of those players who'll always divide opinion. He did do some good stuff, but for me he just doesn't look a natural player - I'll be made up though if he proves me wrong.
The lack of structure for me is down to Leuluai being out & Lockers being played out of position - seemed to become hugely reliant on Finch. Without wishing to open up the Sam half/full back debate again, I think Murphy did enough tonight to warrant trying him at 1, Sam at 6 & Lockers back at 13 for the Wakefield game & semi.
Injuries are suddenly starting to pile up (who'll play centre if Goulding's out?) - so you want to get your senior/best players in the playmaking/organising positions & hope that lays a platform for the rest of the team. Easy, this coaching lark...

If Sam Powell has recovered from injury he should play against Wakefield otherwise Tomkins to 6 and Murphy staying at fullback is the best option.
We need the strongest pack of forwards on the field as that has been where most games have been won this season and weakening the forwards makes it a whole lot harder for the halves.
If Goulding is out then Hughes will probably play centre which means another forward who won't be playing in the pack. Hopefully Tuson will be fit again and we can have Hock, Farrell and O'Loughlin in the halves with Tuson on the bench.
As promising a player as Rhodri Lloyd is he's not at the level yet where he should be starting games in Super League and have to play the full 80 minutes.

| Quote: We were beaten by the better team, I suppose,
"Speaking post match Head Coach Shaun Wane said,
"We were beaten by the better team, I suppose,
"They wanted it a bit more. They had more of a need to win that game.
"With what happened to Micky Mac and losing Darrell Goulding, the changes we made beforehand, losing Sam, I knew it was never going to be an easy game.
"We needed to play well and they were in a desperate situation. Fair play to them, they played better than us.
"We weren't on our game. This is a blip and we will fix it."
Wigan were forced into more team changes with Sam ruled out, young utility back Jack Murphy with a try on his first team debut, Wane added,
"He did well for his try, I'm just gutted we didn't get a win for him on his debut,"'"

| Ever noticed that when a team is struggling or have their backs up against the wall it is always Wigan that suffer a 'shock' defeat against them? Anyone ever wonder if the RFL may be having a quiet word in Wigan's ear?

Why not Gelling to C and King to the Wing?
