Had Leeds beaten us in '98, i'd have felt utterly cheated out of a title that we'd already 'won' weeks before.
And i'm sure that many Saints fans over the age of 20 will feel the same way about the years you mentioned.
Trying to explain our championship to non-RL fans, usually ends up with nothing but puzzled looks.
Yes, its the system we have. And yes we all know the rules.
BUT, is it fair?
How will you feel if we win the GF? For me it will be just relief again (as '9icon_cool.gif.
Stupid system. Nothing more than a money-making exercise.
Needs changing.
And thats the bottom line!
Playoffs are not exclusive to RL. Far from it.
FWIW, the primary reason in my view why playoffs are a necessity in RL is the lack of any form of secondary prize to aim for. If we had a first past the post system, unlike football there would be no point aiming to finish in the top 4 (Champions League) or the top 7 (Europa League) or avoiding the bottom three (relegation). We have none of these to aim for (or avoid in relegation's case).
Just think - if playoffs didn't exist, how many Wigan fans would have completely run out of interest in the Super League from 2003 onwards when we were only ever going to finish 3rd at absolute best?

| I simply won't enjoy winning the GF if we do. I will just be relieved that we have been rewarded rightly for finishing top. We have never been in danger of finishing in any other position than top since we got there in round 3. When Wire beat us to go within 2 points there was a slighht bit of doubt but they give that much into beating us that they lost to bottom of the league the following week - meanwhile we smashed 4th placed Hull away 46-0.
Joke system to make teams playoff for the right to be champions after a long hard league system. I hope they change but i doubt they ever will. Makes me wonder why I buy a season ticket, and if i doubt it, others will. May end up with attendances decreasing if we carry on.

The old Premiership trophy would still be at stake. I can see what your saying but we shouldn't have a playoff system just so middle table clubs 'have something to play for'
Just like us from 04 to 09, they don't derserve a shot at the Championship with 'can't be bothered' performances all season.

| It's great that we've finished top. It shows where we've come from last season, and proves we've been the most consistent team. However, give me the Superleague any day!

Speak for yourself, winning the "hub cap tin pot" is a great achievment!! I personally cant wait for friday and all the jelly and ice cream that goes with it!

It is a brilliant achievement but under the rules means nothing (which as I've said time and again I disagree with but there's nothing we can do)
Would you rather finish top and not win the GF or second and win the GF? I'd take the latter every time.
My jelly and ice-cream is well and truly reserved for October 2nd.

12.45pm kick off home to Wolves
Option A - Watch Latics and head straight to Old Trafford
Option B (the favourite) - Arrive in Manchester in time to watch Latics before heading to Old Trafford
Option C - Watch Latics and then head to the local as Wigan aren't in the final

| not enough emphasis or reward for showing consistency through the season .
the league leaders shield means a lot to ME , ive been there through the drubbings at knowsley hole , then leeds the week after , 150 points + in 2 games , the laughing stock of the league , close to relegation , 4 drives and a kick , having nightmares about the next game but feeling the need to go , walking to the home games with a feeling of dread etc etc
our first silverware of any kind for almost a decade ?
ask any proper wiganer if this means nothing ................i will be very emotional at the bradford game seeing MY team lift silver
if we win the GF , its a bonus in my book after what we have wittnessed over the last 10 years , getting to the top and staying there all season takes some doing
the phoenix is rising from the flames !

So have I and it was the other way round. Leeds then Saints
In the context of the rules........it means nothing. Yes I'm proud as I said, I probably will be emotional, but the real prize is given out at Old Trafford. As I asked, 1st and fail to win the final or 2nd and win the final?

I get what you're saying and as someone who doesn't agree with the playoffs I kind of agree. The rules are though that the CHAMPIONS are crowned at Old Trafford. Therefore, anything less means we've won nothing.

| I think the playoffs should be a seperate competition to give those other teams something to aim for like the league cup in football. Its important but not to the same degree as the rest. That way top of the league could be champions and then be in the best position in this secondary cup. I think the sport needs the playoffs for the money but the meaning from them is too high the champions should be the top of the league like us this year and saints all those times.

20333_1393344959.gif Current thoughts - Mago out or get running up them plantations, get fit or get rid.
Maybe a back up halfback, someone with a bit of experience on a short term deal.
Big tall strong running second rower, like a McMeekin or Sironen type back rower.:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_20333.gif |
