Chester Gladiators are training again tommorrow evening at 7.00 PM on Hoole Park, Chester (Email or PM for directions).

We had a really promising turnout of 18 at last weeks session and are hoping for more of the same this week. We've pencilled in a couple of RL Merit League fixtures already and agreed a deal to share the excellent facilities at Hare Lane with Chester RUFC.

If anybody else is interested in playing for our club, getting involved as a coach or volunteer and generally helping develop league in Chester please get in touch via rugbyleaguechester@yahoo.co.uk.

Chester Gladiators, who are currently in training for their debut campaign, have launched their official club website which can be found at rlhttps://www.chestergladiators.comrl.

Some sections of the site are still under construction but should be fully completed over the course of the weekend.

If anybody would like a link placing on the site (and is prepared to return the compliment) drop me a PM or email to info@chestergladiators.com.

Just a quick update on our progress and reminder for anybody who might of missed it so far.

Chester Gladiators, the city's new rugby league club, are currently preparing for their first ever match against South Humber Rabbitohs on the 24th May in Grimsby (coach running from Chester if you fancy a sesh!).

We then welcome that rabble of Wigan fans to Chester on the 30th/31st May (dependent on CC fixtures) for a launch day event that celebrates the return of rugby league to Chester.

Any prospective new players/coaches/volunteers are still more than welcome. Training is now at Hare Lane, home of Chester RUFC, every Thursday at 7.30 PM.

Website can be found at www.chestergladiators.com but is currently offline thanks to Yahoo so email me at rugbyleaguechester@yahoo.co.uk

Cheers

Our season kicks off tommorrow with a trip to Grimsby to face South Humber Rabbitohs. We're running a coach for just £10 return from The Piper in Chester which leaves at 9.30 AM - we've got a couple of spare seats so if anybody local is at a loose end they are welcome to join us. Drop me an email to rugbyleaguechester@yahoo.co.uk with your contact details.

Next week we bring Rugby League back to Chester when we host Wigan Riversiders at Hare Lane. The match kicks off at 12.00 noon to accomodate the Leeds v Wigan cup game. We're hoping to have a couple of special guests in attendance and a few activities on the day to keep people entertained - not to mention the cheap beer and BBQ that will be available subject to the weather!

As always, any prospective new players/coaches/volunteers are still more than welcome. Training is at Hare Lane, home of Chester RUFC, every Thursday at 7.30 PM.

For more information visit www.chestergladiators.com, drop me a PM or an email to rugbyleaguechester@yahoo.co.uk

Rugby League makes a welcome return to the city of Chester this weekend when Wigan Riversiders make the short journey south to play Chester Gladiators in an RL Merit League clash at Hare Lane, home of Chester RUFC.

Chester made the long trip to Grimsby last week to face South Humber Rabbitohs in their first ever game and, despite losing 32-16, produced a performance that promises much for the future. Meanwhile, the Riversiders have made a fantastic start to life in the RL Merit League, picking up comprehensive wins over Birmingam Bulldogs, Crewe & Nantwich Steamers and Lymm Wolves with the only blot on their copybook being a narrow defeat to Sheffield Forgers.

The Gladiators will be joined on the day by the Chester Goddesses cheerleading troupe and the local press will also be in attendance. Immediately after the match the Leeds Rhinos versus Wigan Warriors Challenge Cup quarter-final clash will be shown live on the big screen. Other events taking place on the day include a raffle featuring selection of prizes kindly donated by Warrington Wolves, St Helens, Wigan Warriors and Widnes Vikings and first try scorer competition for the Leeds versus Wigan Challenge Cup match.

The clubhouse bar will be open throughout the day and a range of hot food will also be available. The match kicks of at noon (12.00 PM) and admission is free. The weather forecast is good so why not come along and enjoy a full day of Rugby League action?

After a very successful 2008 season we're now starting to put some plans in place for 2009. Here's a quick update on a couple of things we have in the pipeline.

Interested in junior rugby league in Chester?

We remain committed to starting a junior section at the club in 2009. The specific age groups we will target are still to be confirmed and will depend on levels of interest however we will attempt to cater for ANY local youngster who wants to try rugby league.

If you live locally and have kids who you want to get into Rugby League please drop us an email to info@chestergladiators.com so we can keep track of names and numbers.

Interested in becoming a volunteer for Chester Gladiators?

On Friday 21st November we are holding an information session at Chester University about a course we are running in Chester in the near future. This course is 100% free and is designed to introduce rugby league coaching to those interested in getting involved with the sport.

The idea behind the course is that we will not only work with local schools to get children in Chester playing Rugby League but we will also hopefully create one or two junior teams at Chester Gladiators and anybody completing the course will be more than welcome to get involved further down the line should they wish. This award is ideal for students and anybody else interested in coaching rugby league whether to adults or children.

The information session takes place on Friday 21st November 2008 in room CML009, which is in the Molloy Building on the main university campus. The session starts at 2.30 PM and will last no longer than 90 minutes. For more information please email info@chestergladiators.com or call me on 07899 717829.

Please note that parking is limited so email me with your car model and registration number to reserve parking spaces.

As always we are very keen to hear from potential players too, whatever you're level of experience. Around 60% of last years squad were totally new to the game.

Thanks

Jim

The bloke I was speaking to from the RFl last week mentioned you may go into the conference regional next year from the Merit League Jim. Is that what you're doing? We're in 2 minds what to do as they don't seem to be able to give me firm plans of the league structures as yet.

Not at all mate. Haven't spoken to anybody from the RFL as yet and it's certainly not our plan. I think we'll give it a crack in 2010 but not yet.

I thought as much and that it was likely a year too soon for you guys. Hopefully we can run a 2nd team in the merit league next year even if we put a team in the conference and have another trip to Chester in the sunshine. icon_thumb.gif

Wigan Riversiders Eels will be playing Chester Gladiators in Chester this Saturday kicking off at 2pm at Chester RUFC. A few Chester based Wigan fans came down to give us support last year and will be most welcome again on Saturday. It's 2nd v 4th in the league table with the outcome important to both clubs with regard to playoff positions.
