Quote: tigertot "Well I guess he would be unable to inform the ref. If there is a qualified official observing in a formal capacity who sees incidents such as this I do not have a problem with him notifying the ref. I am pretty sure that, for instance, if Tomkins was laid out in the act of scoring & it was missed by the ref, a huge number would be screaming more pathetic paranoia if the VR, or other official, failed to mention it to the ref. I have said elsewhere, i would not necessarily be against a system like Aussie Rules where no-one is sent off & it is all reviewed afterwards. As long as everyone accepted it.'"

Nice that you have acknowleged the point that many here are making... The inconsistancies. Thank you.

Quote: tigertot "Just to be clear - if the video ref sees a deliberate & dangerous strike to the head do you think he should be able to inform the ref?'"

1.Yes, but this should be made clear from the RFL that this is the case so that everyone is aware that this is the case, the main complaint I see on this thread is that the RFL deny this happens or try to cover up this happens. This also leave open the question as to what other advice the VR is passing on during the game. The entire VR/Ref system is falling into disrepute because of this. Clarity would go a long way to removing a lot of suspicion.

2.If the VR is going to act in the way you suggest (yes, I know it happens already but that is officially not the case) then the VR must be seen to be above suspicion and be unbiased - Ganson is a known Saint Helens supporter (and I am sure other refs have their own favoured teams) - so the RFL must ensure that, again to prevent accusations of bias, that the VR is totally neutral.

I do not personally think there is a cover up or some kind of plot to keep some teams down (I do not think the RFL have the wit for that) - but the lack of clarity in the ref/vr system does lead to a perception that this is the case.

Quote: captaindan "I listen in on a scanner to the referee, tough judges and video ref.

When MickyMac hit the tackle, the linesman said it was ok, then when the player did not get up, the ref stopped play and walked over to see what had gone on. Then, even though he had not been asked, Ganson shouted down the referee's ear,

'he made direct contact with the head, Direct Contact James, DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE HEAD'
It was obvious straight away that Ganson wanted him red carded and from that comment alone, Mr Child sent him off.

At half time, the ref was chatting to the touch judges and said, ' really did not see anything as I was blind sided, but Gans said there was direct contact so I thought I should send him off'

Whatever happened to the video ref saying nothing until asked, did we not learn that lesson when Ganson and Klein cocked up that grand final?
The RFL constantly deny that the fourth official or Video ref says anything, but after listening to them for the last few seasons you would be astonished at what is said.
Just watch on any TV game when the touch judges come in for a chat and don't actually say anything, the ref wll then say to them, yes, so you say he needs a card/penalty/castration....... and they all nod as the video ref has his say on proceedings that he has no right to comment on.

The day that the RFL make the referee's/ touch judges and vid ref's comments available to everyone by broadcasting them like other sports do, is the day that we can start to trust what is going on. Until then, the game is fixed and if I did not love my club, I would seriousley wonder why my money goes into such a crooked game.'"

It's not a case of whether he should or not it's the fact he's not allowed to and has been reprimanded for it in the past already.

Now I don't think it is disgraceful. I think this is exactly what a VR should do. Let play move on and let him look at it. If it's a penalty then pull play back.

I do think we need clarification on it though. As far as I was aware the above use of the VR has never been made public.

I was not questioning that, though I too would like clarity on whether he can or can't, I was questioning whether the poster thought it should be used.

You've got me there, unique for a Lanc, but what have I acknowleged? That the ref's decision is based on the evidence & severity of the incident, not that another player slapped another player last season? Raynor was rightly SO & banned for that foul, using VR evidence. I argued strongly at the time, against similar paranoia, on the Bulls board that the officials got it spot on. The inconsistancies (sic) are from the myopic Pie eyed.

Sorry, been off line.
I do think that it should be used. But the way it would be administered would need to be very cut and dry.
When the radio system first came out, many of the referee's would take the earpeice out as too much information was shouted by everyone. Now it is far better with touch judges only commenting using set terms and phrases, and this helps the clarity of what is being said. The video ref would need the same discipline and there should be a guideline perhaps that if play has gone on beyond the next ptb, it could/should not be called back, just placed on report. Otherwise we risk slowing the game down to a sereis of penalties and scrums.

I would like to see the video ref used to clarify each penalty or knock on and he would ONLY speak if he disagreed with the referee's decision.
This way, the ref would feel secure in that the major decisions are being checked on a continuous basis and unless he hears anything, he knows he was correct.

However, the perceived integrity of the whole system hinges on the RFL changing their usual stance and adopting an open and honest stance so that everyone can hear what is going on. The biggest hurdle to this at the moment in my opinion, is Mr Cummings. I think that his small minded approach sets himself on a pedestol as 'one whom must not be questioned' and until he goes, our game will suffer this type of debate every week.

Mr Cummings replacement??

Look no further than Karl Kirkpatrick. Now retired and still an active interest in the game. With the new remit of open honesty to work with, I think he could be perfect for the job.
