You've got him for free, he is one of the most iconic Welsh Rugby players ever, and as for Wigan having enough publicity already, you need to get in the real world.
Rugby League and Wigan (not the other way round) needs all the positive publicity they can get. You two sound like a pair of 'flat earth' people.'"
I hear you. But how is signing a 37 year old Welsh Rugby Union player good for Wigan? Without using the 'P' word. I wouldnt mind if he was actually good.

A film is about to be made about him. The film will be watched by millions of people.
Pretty much everyone in Wales will know he plays for us, they will know about us, we will be all over the news.
He is a highly admired man for 'coming out' plenty of people know his story and they will also be interested to see he has signed for us.
People who don't follow RL will not give squat how good he is/how old he is.
I can't believe you need that explaining to you.

I am still waiting for someone to tell me why this is positive publicly.
The most famous team in the game signing a 37 year old former RU player who ought to be retiring can only be seen as negative publicity. I am sure the RU biased media will have a field day as to what this says about the state of RL when it's premier club is taking on a 37 year old former RU player.
If he has been signed for PR and not for playing ability someone has lost the plot for the above reason.
And he can't have been signed on playing ability.
There is only one conclusion. A very poor signing on all fronts.

Seriously though, this 'we are Wigan, we don't need publicity' thing is a load of deluded rubbish. RL and Wigan needs all the publicity it can get and this sort of thing could just be the start.

| This signing is hardly going to make or break next season is it? Also it doesnt count on the cap. Why is anybody even getting worked up about it?

| Quote: Famous "I have heard why Wigan have signed Thomas and it is very little to do with his playing ability and more for the commercial side of things. Also there are a lot of very talented young Welsh RU and RL players and if Thomas' signing means that the club can attract these players instead of them going to RU then he will be well worth it. I must admit I was astounded when I first heard the news but the more that I have been told about it the more I think it is a shrewd move.'"
I've backed the signing from a publicity side of things and you add even more sense to the signing when you consider he could help us attract some young union talent from Wales.
Lenagan has made no secret of the fact he wants to tap in to streams of all areas of potential talent and this move could really help him. The 2 young lads at Wire are prime examples of the sort of junior talent that could be available.

You trying to tell me nobody will want there company name associated with a guy like thomas. who'll this time next year will have a big hoolywood star playing his life story to the world
Sorry Pal It's Mickey Rourke playing him not Pacino or De Niro...the wrestler apart he isnt a great success as a leading actor who will be interested in it....??? sell that film to the yanks for a start......
"A welsh guy that had a good long career playing for Wales against the Brits Australians and South Africans may have Met Mandela at the World Cup in 1995.
retired from the game, Announced he was gay, played a different Type of Rugby called Rugby League wasnt very good at it."
unless its full of Car chases Bar room brawls and Shootings Its got no chance....
and On Rugby players to make Films About there are more interesting and better subjects than Gareth Thomas... Billy Boston, Mike Gregory, Jean Galia, Tawera Nikau, and the Recently departed Cec Thompson, to name a few.....
this stinks..... it stinks for Wigan..... Which to be fair I wouldnt normally be bothered about, but it rubs off on the Rest of the Rugby League, is this the only way we can promote our game ?????
Gareth Thomas Great Rugby union player he was should have bowed out gracefully talk about Rugby League all he likes in After dinner speeches but jesus the guy cant play it....

Who wouldnt sign for the best club in the country if they offered them a contract? Id rather have a crack at the top than play for somebody cack and be comfortable. Imagine if he does well and wins a trophy next season with us? I bet he would be made up.
Why is it embarrasing? Give me one good reason?
