| Quote: cadoo "I've always thought Charnley has been a bit error prone. Goulding may not have the same attacking prowess as Charnley, but more often than not he is very safe and error free.
I've been encouraged by Brett Finch after every game. He has improved and seems to have settled in more with the squad. His defence needs to improve and sometimes some passes don't come off, but with time he will fit right in.
Joel Tomkins is in a tricky situation for me. He's being asked to learn a whole new skill set at centre and pretty quickly too. In defence I haven't noticed any mishaps, which is encouraging. It's just his decision making and lack of acceleration that is letting him down. I certainly wouldn't drop him though.
McIlorum has been poor for a few weeks now. His place must be in serious threat with Logan Tomkins doing a superb job at Widnes.
Still I don't feel wholesale changes are needed. With the situation we've found ourselves in (losing WCC, getting over Madge leaving, Gleeson leaving and a new halfback partnership) I think to be second - win our game in hand and we're joint top - does not warrant us to panic. We can still win this league and we can beat Wire in the cup. We've a squad capable of doing it. By the end of June we'll see Andy Coley, Gareth Hock and possibly Stuart Fielden return which will freshen up the side. I'm still confident.
Credit to Les Catalans though. They're a real threat this year. Trent Robinson has turned them around.'"
I dont think you are wrong with any of that. As you say Finch has been improving the last few weeks but Charnley, Joel Tomkins and McIlorum have been poor and make too many mistakes. Players have certainly been dropped for far less and I think those 3 have been very lucky that we have played some poor teams and have been winning fairly easily. Maguire does not like to change a winning team and I think that is what has saved them from being dropped. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens next week but then again with the Exiles match they may get another chance.

| Some of the posts on here are embarrassing. We got beat, in a game that was very even for most of the game, by a team who played the best rugby I've seen for many years earlier this season at Wigan.
With a full team at their disposal Catalan will give any team a run for their money.
Maybe Wigan weren't 100% on their game, but that doesn't happen every game, and sometimes you have to accept defeat graciously.
Well done Catalan.

| i think far to many people on this forum are more bothered about us losing & warrington winning! and dont they just know it! all the warrington fans on here gloating and stupidly we're rising to it! to me it sounds like it was quite a balanced game, with errors on both sides! we cant of been as bad as were being made out to be otherwise castleford would have ran away with it, and the points margin would of been much larger! we are missing our big props & i think we will find our form when we get our full squad back! and get them playing like the champions we are! just in time to thrash warrington and wipe that smug smile off their faces!

Play that game 10 more times, we'd win 9 of them. Absouletly no penalties second half for us and you just have to say well done Catalan for that! Put's pressure on us though, let's see how we get on.

Boringly.'"
Seconded.
Never going to be easy winning at Catalans but there has been a number of Wigan fans telling us that once the game in hand is won you'll be top. Surely you expected an invasion of Wire fans when you lost - just as will happen when we lose!
This season is going to the final weekend - I expect we'll lose before the season has finished as will you.

| Onwards and upwards. Yes I'm disappointed we lost (so much so that I tuck the dogs out for 2 hour walk to clear my head), but these things happen. We've got some very difficult games ahead, which will undoubtedly show where were at. Two points of top with a game in hand, ain't bad. We've all seen just how well this team can play, I just hope the team begin to perform on a consistent basis and for the whole 80 minutes. Then I'll be happy.

| Most of the flack from Wire fans on here has been in response to those of limited intelligence who have claimed some kind of god-given right for the pies to be top of SL. Catalans are a very dangerous side and it's no disgrace to lose to them. Nothing can be taken for granted this year. Pies should be happy that you have one of the best sides in SL: Wire and Cats are two of the other best sides.

| Not convinced with this Wigan team, we aren't creating anything from our half backs Deacon is past it, jury still out on Finch, missing Piggy and not been replaced Joel is not the answer at centre and when George goes heaven help us!!hand on heart can anyone say they are enjoying the rugby dished up this season compared to last, we will still give them our support but we have lots of problems.

I think the team relies too much on sweeping cross field passing moves to score and to make breaks with little variation. It takes a lot of hard work from the outside backs and props to get the team set for an attacking move and with the team making more errors this year it means the team keep having to rebuild the platform. There doesn't seem to be anyone in the middle of the park who can make a break or create something out of nothing. Leuluai can run with ball in hand and break the line occasionally but that's usually only as a broken-field runner. Against a tight defence he's a bit more limited.
Most of Wigan's attacking threat comes at the end of a set of six as the ball goes wide to Tomkins, so a disciplined sliding defence can cover. They can also usually guess that it's Tomkins who receives the ball. Of course teams still find it hard to stop him, but they seem to be cutting out moves easier.
Handling errors are also making it harder in attack because the team has to set the platform again before trying to work the ball wide, whereas a side like Wire who use offloads as their main way through a defence can work openings down the middle as well as out wide. Add to that the fact that close to the line it seems the players want to score every time which means they tend to miss the opportunity to get repeat sets and build pressure.
As it stands when playing in the halves neither Leuluai, Deacon nor Finch really pose a threat running with the ball so perhaps a strike player in the halves would add a threat with ball in hand down the middle and give teams another player to worry their defences.
