Quote: DaveO "It was poor selection from Wane. Williams has been interchanging with MM so putting him at 6 stopped that.

There is also speculation on Mike's board he was carrying an injury.

Hampshire sat on the bench most of the match and has played 6 all his junior career. Pointless use of a bench spot

He also went with Flower who was obviously not going to match fit and Dudson is not up to it. I just don't get why Taylor did not play. He's back in the squad next week according to Wane.

IMO this was Wane's worst performance as coach since selecting Murphy in the Leeds play off semi final.'"

Agree, poor team selection choosing favourites like Hughes and Williams when neither are currently good enough to play first team big games. Shaun looked worried and knew he had messed up about halfway through the first half when the screen went on him.

Bringing back players from weeks out for such a tough game as also quite worrying, lack of judgement, loyalty to certain players but not others is quite divisive.

Taylor out but back next week??

Wane biggest mistake was not picking Sam Powell at 6 unless he was injured and unavailable.
Even Wigan fans underestimate how vital he is.

Think Shaun Wane got it totally wrong for the following reasons:

1. Making disrespectful comments about them in the build up - why?! He wrote their team talk for them there and I fail to see what advantage it was to us

2. Fringe defence and a lack of firepower in the forwards was a big problem. Our double-winning centre-winger partnership (Charnley and Goulding) and Scott Taylor were all out on dual reg for Workington whilst we have Manfredi, Sarginson and Dudson in the team.

3. Interchanges. What is the bloody point in leaving Hughes and Hampshire on the bench for 65 minutes? That was an energy sapping game, we needed fresh players.

4. Not selecting Hampshire at 6. Fair enough loads of fans agreed with playing Williams at 6 and gave only now changed their minds when it's gone wrong, but Rocky adds a spark to our team that other players can't. He should be playing either 6 or 1 every week while Green is out IMO

5. The attack in there 20. I'm not sure whether this is down to coaching or players, but we love looked completely disorganised, I could tell you who was getting the ball every time because we went up in 1s instead of 2s and 3s, junior coaches got on about that so I'm damn sure we should know better

Overall the worst knockout performance since 2007 IMO, and we have far better players available now than we did then. I still think Wane is a very good coach but he does have a lot to learn, hopefully this will serve to remind him to stay grounded and not be so arrogant as he seems to have been at times this season

Summed it up quite well there Grimmy, the fringe defence in particular was an obvious problem from the start. Every time they shifted it wide they had a 2-3 man overlap. They out-Wiganed Wigan!

The kicking game too was garbage and lacking execution. How many times did Matty Smith just pop a floated kick straight into the arms of a Cas player? Not his best day.

Grimmy you mention in point 5 regarding our structure when attacking in the Cas 20, I have this feeling that Wigan are maybe letting this obsession with the obstruction rule by the match officials get to them.
The use of multiple dummy runners as been Wigan's main line of attack even to the extent of getting a lot of criticism for having no plan B , maybe Wigan are finding it very hard to adjust to finding another line of attack.

Like this analysis a lot. In addition, we have got a very long way on teamwork, commitment and fitness, but we do not have a real game breaking player in the 17 that played (lots of potential, though). I didn't see any spark of imagination or even a plan B. Like someone said, we could have played on for a few hours and still not got over the Cas try line.

I found the substitutions very strange.
Hampshire was brought on too late in the game. With 65 mins gone we had only used four interchanges. Then we introduced Hampshire and Hughes. The only reason I can think is that Wane wanted to keep some fresh legs for late in the game as the weather and pitch would make it very tiring.

What killed us was the needless penalty that Hughes gave away when Cas were struggling to get out of their own quarter. He'd just been told by the referee on the previous tackle to get away, then went and did it again. I do think had that not happened Cas would have cracked again and we would have gone on to win the game.

However to be fair the second Cas try deserved to win the game, it was a superb piece of centre play and a great catch from behind his back by the winger.

It was noticeable how the players seemed to have accepted defeat by the time Hampshire came on. He looked quick but by that time he was running with no support so was never going to make something happen.
On a second point by the end only Gelling, of the starting team, seemed to have any running left in him. As a result he was playing acting half back for much of the last quarter with no structured attack running off him.

The Castleford player blatantly trapped his arm - Hughes tried to free it several times, but to no avail.

They scored two tries on the back of dodgy penalties - I thought Silverwood and his assistants (at least I assumed he had assistants, they didn't f'ing see anything - again) had an absolute shocker.

We were awful, full credit to Castleford for playing to the ref's whistle, but he let them get away with murder. Don't think they were onside once yesterday.

I thought Williams had a bad game until he moved to Hooker.

I thought Hampshire tried to be a hero and go on his own far too much when he came on.

Aye, our two late subs both gave up holding down penalties which led to tries. I know Hughes and Hampshire are young lads but at the same time I bet they've both been playing the game at least 10 years at some level. You would think they would both have the sense not to risk penalties late on in an energy sapping game when you're on the wrong end of the scoreline. Like you say, if Hughes doesn't give a penalty I think we would have won. If Hampshire didn't give away his penalty we would have been in with half a chance as well. All we had to do was see out the set of six (they weren't particularly getting on top of us at that point) and get the ball back. Those two penalties gave up time, field position and more possession - everything we needed.

I think it's a poor excuse if that is the reason. Surely they don't attack the 20 that way in training, they certainly don't in the warm up!

It was a lack of organisation and too many forwards stood with hands on their hips watching their team mate taking it up on his own and getting tackled by 4 blokes that scuppered us. Nothing to do with obstruction
