I can't believe you think it is this is a plausible thing for him to do. To do as you suggest he would have to say to Kearney something along the lines of "Would you like the coaching job at Wigan for 2010 but I have to tell you if our current coach wins enough games I will withdraw the offer".

That is never going to happen.

The only way IL can decide if he wants a replacement based on results is either wait until the end of the season when all the results are in or decide if we win or lose X number games by a certain date the issue is decided.

Either way he either makes an unconditional offer to a potential new coach or he doesn't. To suggest he can approach potential coaches and sound them out about a job that may or may not be there is ridiculous. No one is going to hang about from June to the end of October waiting to see if IL is going to come back and offer them a job.



I do and I also know when a plan makes sense and when it doesn't. Your suggestion doesn't make any sense.

You obviously live in a different commercial world to me. Sounding people out about possible future opening happens in business all the time. It's something I've done as part of my job.

Lenagan is in Aus sounding out players, so decides to sound out potential coaches.

IL - "Stephen there is a strong possibility the Wigan coaching job might be available next season. Would you be interested in more formal discussions later in the year should that be the case?" Not difficult is it?

Lenagan no doubt has asked other as well and gets an idea of candidates interested. If he decides the results are still house at some point in the future (which lets face it is all about the Cup) he can then target the person he most favours who has expressed an interest and he can hopefully quickly conclude a deal.

It's not a scenario that is as off the wall as you are as desperate to make out.

And at the end of the day, the alternative is not talking to anyone.

Even if you do that for the most admirable reasons - i.e. because you don't want to risk embarrassing the current employee - it's still likely to leave you short when you give him his marching orders (which, let's face it, we all know is going to happen).

The comings and goings of the Wigan chairman are going to attract RL press attention all the time. Maybe IL hasn't quite got a grip on this yet, but it's not totally his fault if every single time he picks the phone up someone is prepared to make a story out of it. MacNamara did it. The Wakey chairman did it. Now the NZRL have done it. If he's constantly being rung up by the press and asked what's going on, all he can really do - without revealing too much of his hand or spoiling what may be delicate negotiations - is give stock answers.

I really don't think he's the villain that some folk are trying to claim, and I don't understand why they're doing this. We know we need a better coach. People have been getting on IL's back all year about it. Now that he's trying to fix something up, he's being equally criticised. Surely the events of the last 24 hours have proved that this really is a nothing incident.

Iv got a feeling Mr Kearney will be taking his seat in the West stand next season, maybe this season.
