i can see penalty counts through the roof in the first few games if this is ratified (still some small hope it'll get reversed next month by the looks of it - but i'm not holding my breath)

It's bloody ridiculous. It's a great part of the game, just looking on YouTube, how many videos of "big hits" are full of massive shoulder hits.

Sod it, we may as well go watch some penalty shoot outs - sorry, rugby union!

Probably good idea. I don't mind shoulder charges per se but more often than not they are targeted at the head and why they are hardly ever penalised as a high tackle is a mystery to me. Probably more dangerous than a swinging arm.

When it comes off it looks spectacular, however i have seen it creeping into junior rugby more and more and i see lads using it [and more often than not missing] when they should be putting their shoulder into a tackle..i think it should be allowed but definately shouldn't be encouraged in the junior game

I would have kept it but any contact to th head automatic sin bin and that would go for tackles where contact with the head is made.

Rulings like this should be decided by a player's committee and no-one else.

I wonder whats going to happen to all those charge downs with the shoulder. That seems to be the norm nowadays when challenging the kicker on the last.

I agree, but I think there have been a couple, & only a couple I can recollect, that were borderline & ended up as a sending off. So maybe to avoid that complication they are taking away the issue. In reality the high impact shoulder charges are pretty rare. By far the most common is the big front on chest impact. The suggestion that the charge down of the kicker is regularly a shoulder charge I just don't recognise.

But in that case they need to ban tackling too as some of those can end up 'borderline'. Actually so are many 'forward passes' so let's uncomplicate that rule too and do away with passing. As for scoring; look what happened to Amos Roberts when he went in for a try. I reckon those need banning too...unless we just ban the posts to end any chance of collisions with them. As for the pitch! Players could turn an ankle on some of those divots! I think the best solution all round would be for all of us to play each game in our head and decide the result by discussion and debate. No worries about players gettin injured then. I'll send a memo to the RFL...

I agree we mustn’t get this one out of proportion, I don’t think this is a deal breaker as far as our game is concerned. You don’t see it in every match, and its loss is not a sign of a great decline to sanitized RL IMO. There are much greater problems in the game that are not being addressed, things that may bring the game to its knees, but not this. Not worth getting all hot and bothered about this one.
