| Quote: Wigan28/Leeds18 Andy "How many of those clean breaks led to tries?
He's still raw and some of the things he gets criticised for should be sorted out with experience, however the thing I have a problem with in regards to Gelling is his finishing. He runs it hard, straight and aggressive when taking the ball in to give the forwards a rest, which is why his metre stats are generally one of the best in most games, but give him open space or the try line at his mercy and his doesn't back himself in the same way.'"
Agreed. He's a hard worker, with a good attitude, which is presumably why Waney is sticking with him, but his main problems are a lack of pace, poor handling and often poor judgment. Those can be learned/coached, and I agree he's got bags of potential, my view is that he should be learning those skills elsewhere, at present.
He's had a dozen games now, yet Thornley, on debut, (and also out of position, don't forget!) was at least as good, if not better than him.

He shot out of the line for no reason. I was stood within earshot Carmont had a quiet word, Finch was a bit more vocal, gave him the rounds of the kitchen.

| Great build for a super league player. I think he's been brought upto the first team too early. I will admit that I don't get to watch all the Wigan games but the ones I have seen, he has made the simpliest try scoring chances look very difficult. Also has terrible ball security. Time to learn though and I think under Wane he will only get better.

When Richards is back I think that may be all we see of Gelling for 2012 and that's probably fair enough. He's done a good job IMO but probably has played a lot more games then Wane would have liked due to injuries.
I think they'll get him back playing with the u20's and put loads of work in to him on the training field ready for next year. They'll have that bit more freedom to try him in a few positions at u20 level and that will help.
With a good and full pre season under his belt I think he could be a cracker for us in 2013.

I think this is the point many are missing...He was not due to play, and has stood in for Pat and done a very effective DEFENSIVE job, allowing others to flourish.
Before you get on my case about how it would have been better to use someone else, look at the table!!

| I was and am hoping the Gelling will gel at Wigan, but week after week, there appear to be more and more flaws to his game. I dont think he has the trust of his centre, there are too many times when Carmont is going himself rather than passing out to Gelling.
OK, he is playing out of position, but that poistion is still on a Rugby pitch and to be a good centre, you must understand wingers. If and when Pat is back, I think Mr Gelling might get some starting roles out on loan, I can not see him being selected in in Carmonts place next season. In fact, I would have Thronley out on the wing against the Whinos.
How much time do we give him? We moaned about Richards, but he came here after winning a Grand Final; Gelling came because of disciplinary reasons.

He is still a kid for goodness sake!!! If he was from Wigan people would be creaming themselves.

Thornley can't play in the cup. He was signed after the deadline.

Yep I agree, as the other members of the team have been running in plenty of tries, Gelling bombing one or two chances hasn't actually cost us a game, my opinion may change if it does mind! I would much rather Pat's stand-in was defensively sound than someone like Ainscough who scored tries for fun but let as many in at his own end.
Wane gave Russell and King a chance on the wing and obviously wasn't convinced just yet. I think we'll see more of Thornley this season, though, he was very good on Sunday.

| Quote: Deano G "Many Wigan fans love nothing better than piling in with unjustified/over harsh criticism of certain players. We should perservere with Gelling, he's raw but raw in the sense that an uncut diamond is raw. It's up to Gelling and Wigan to shape this lad into the star he has the potential to become - he seems keen to play for the club so we should give him a chance.'"
Maybe, but shouldn't he be being 'polished' in the U20s, rather than in the first team, where he clearly isn't good enough?
I mean, he can't even catch! Carmont made a cracking break on Sunday and would normally have slung a long ball out to Richards for him to finish off. Carmont saw Gelling, and decided to stick hold instead, presumably because he couldn't trust him to catch it.
Supposing that had been in the last minutes of the Grand Final and we'd have been three points behind? Is that acceptable?

Suppose he passes it to him and he catches it and scores? Just like he's managed on 7 other occasions this season.

Come on Conroy, you're smart enough and you're at every game. How does that figure compare with the amount of chances he's bombed, whether that's dropping balls or running in touch, for instance?

Suppose he passes it to him and he catches it, then shoves it up his jumper, leans back, and howls at the moon ?

What about the 3 or 4 passes into touch by Carmont over the last 2/3 games that immediately everyone blamed Gelling for?
As for Carmont not passing and Blaming it on Gelling!
He made a poor defensive read for Wakeys opening try on Sunday but in the dozen other games he's played he's hardly put a foot wrong in defense.
