If I remember rightly, the only reason they changed frm GB to Wales, Ireland etc was to claim extra funding from the government. was it Sporting England???

| Personally I prefer England, can't tell you why I just do.
However, I would one day like to see a "British and Irish Lions" tour - similar to that of RU's, but actually taking Welsh/Irish/Scottish players as well as English players. I think its only then when we should refer it to GB.

| There is no magic any more now that it is the home nations, I don’t get the same buzz from watching Scotland, England, Wales or Ireland. It used to be the highlight of the RL calander for my money, but not anymore.
I feel that it should be team GB for all the minor tournaments (test series, 4 nations etc) and split into home nations for the World cup.
When team GB get together for the 4 Nations or a test series. Have a "B" comp running for the home nations.
This will allow "real" Scottish, Welsh and Irish players to represent their country at RL against a more level playing field against England "B" and France.
There was nowt wrong with the old system, so why can’t we just go back?
Don’t give me anything that it helps develop players from the minor (in RL terms!!) nations. At the moment every player with an ounce of talent declares them self eligible for England because they know that is the only chance they will get to play against the Ockers and Kiwis.
Let these talented players play for their respective nations, but at the same time let them be in contention to be picked for GB against the big boys.
At the moment the GB team would be made up of a majority of English players, that pretty much stands to reason. But think of all the players that have played for GB over the years would not have declared themself for England
Of the top of my head
Brian Carney, Tez O’Connor, Barrie Mac, Chris Joynt, Jonathon Davis, KFC, Iysten Harris etc

They would all have played for England if there was no GB equivalent, with the exception of Carney and Davies perhaps.
O'Connor/Mac/Joynt/KC/Harris are all blatantly Lancs/Yorks lads.

And that is exactly the reason we need Team GB.

I don't follow.
The fact is that most of the players you quoted are English.
We can form make believe teams with Chris Joynt playing for Ireland, Cunningham playing for Wales, Richards playing for Ireland, Briers playing for Wales etc etc but the fact is it's all just one big cover up.

I would agree with this and go back to the tours every four years as GB.

Tours would be difficult as the league seasons run simultaneously here and in Aus.

No more a make believe cover up than what is happening now.
At least under the old system a player declared himself available for a nation and stuck with them because they knew that if they were good enough, they would get picked for GB.
And if players of the calibre of Barrie Mac, Terry O and Harris played for Wales and Ireland then the standard across the home nation sides would be much, much higher than what it is currently.
Yeah I agree that it is a falsehood. But just imagine English born SL players with roots elsewhere deciding to play for Wales, Scotland etc, and then you would have players who would never be considered for England, getting invaluable international RL experience. This in turn would undoubtedly increase the standard of play in the Super league.
It has got to be much better this way, than having 17 aussies running out for the home nations, because no other Bug*er wants to play for them. It is always going to be a falsehood because people in Ireland or Scotland have no real interest in RL.

This gives them that chance, and it doesn't really make England any weaker anyway, who would be playing for us? Briers and Richards, that's about it. You touch on selection too, I think this needs sorting, it should be whichever country you have lived in longest IMO, none of the great grandparents rubbish.'"
sorry mate i cant understand your reasoning.
you dont have to pay for a welsh team to play for wales.
all the best welsh players are already in superleague, making them eligible for GB
the great W J Boston was welsh and played for GB.
