I'm all for dropping the name, but the above is not quite true. The Old English for 'warriors' was 'wigan'.

You're looking at this from a purely adult perspective. Most kids I know, including my 7 year old, do associate with the name. As adults we can choose to use/ignore it. If, however it helps market to a younger potential fan, especially in these times where there is so much vying for their attention, then surely it's a good thing. Btw, he loves Max too!

Yes, Wigan RL is preferable, but I don't see it happening.

I cannot stand the warriors tag, or "rhinos, bulls...etc" its embarrassing., cheesy, pointless and should all be dropped.

Anyone who says their kids go to watch the "warriors" has it wrong. They go to watch the local rugby team with their parents, they'd go if it was Wigan RLFC, Warriors or anything.

im an old school fan and have always wanted to revert back to wigan rlfc.
having said that, although it took a bit of getting used to i refer to them as warriors......it makes them distinct from latics in a way.
i travel the country a lot and wear the rugby shirt most of summer and get asked "do you support wigan?"....when i say yes, they tell me they support aston villa or summat.......so i stress WARRIORS.
lots of folk away from the north think latics are the only team in wigan.
strange, but true.
