| Watch all of the vidoes of the game, particularly the one from Hull FC that Alex has just posted.

That from Goulding is centre play at it's worst. Can you imagine what would have happened if Matt Gidley got that opportunity.
His winger would have had a walk in.

Are you really comparing Matt Gidley - a 31 year old international who has won every trophy imaginable, represented his country and origin countless times, plays for one of the best teams in super league and has bags of experience to a 20 year old Goulding at the beginning of his career who only has a few years of experience playing for Wigan behind him?
Sorry but thats unfair and harsh - yeah he broke through into the team a few years ago but he is only 20, he has his career ahead of him, he has plenty time to learn from his mistakes and develop himself into the player we know he can be. I for one think he can be great for Wigan, he has the right attitude and he does have skill and the neccesary speed - we cant have the fastest players in the world but he aint exactly as slow as Wellens is he, like someone else said he would beat the likes of Vaealiki, Bailey, Ainscough, Carmont etc in a race. Sometimes he makes the wrong decisions yes, but so does everyone, if Carmont had made those two bad decicions against Hull a word wouldnt be said.
If he wasnt good enough he wouldnt have been given the No 3 shirt last year and this year he would have been sold off like brown, wild, aspinwall, gleeson, robinson etc.
When we do let our young Wigan lads go people complain about bringing these average aussies in like Phelps and Bailey, yet when a lad like Goulding gets his chance we get people calling for his head saying he isnt good enough.

He is 12 months older than Sam T. In 12 months time, when Sam makes a couple of errors are you going to be saying the same things? Are you going to compare him to Long or some other seasoned player and say he wouldn't have made them.
For me we need to give the lad a chance, yes he is going to make errors and he will learn from them. If he does not then that's his fault and he will be cast aside. Id rather see him play centre than Phelps or Baily.

| I can't help but think to Joel Tomkins when discussing a young player not fufilling potential. Only 12months back alot of people wouldn't have batted an eyelid if he'd been let go by the club and now he's considered one of our best players and a certain England player of the future. That shows what patience can do when it come to a youngster. It can be very costly writing them off too soon.
If we look at Gouldings preformences over his time in the first team he's probably done alot more then Tomkins did in his first couple of years yet to be fair has had alot more games then afforded to Tomkins.
I like Goulding tbh and think he has alot of improvment in him. He does need to improve but he has the basis of a good superleague player. I really think Wigan need to get working hard with him on the training pitch and get him watching the likes of Gidley in action to see a centre that makes great choices with ball in hand. He knows when to go himself and when to pass and that comes with experience. He's obviously got bags of natural talent to go with it but Goudlings no mug.

| Hold on. He didnt play against Wakefield so Hull was his first game. Goulding IMO once he lost his starting spot last year didnt get a fair chance to regain it. Not just Nobles fault because he did have a few injuries as well.
Lets give him a chance before we judge him eh?
IMO there is quite a few british backs that have carrying too much weight. Gleeson being the prime example. If you look at the Aussie backs like Falou and Inglis although they are naturally big guys they do not carry any excess beef like the british boys which makes them more agile and quick as well as maintaining their natural strength and power.
The weight he has lost in the offseason will be to his benefit once he gets some confidence and game time.
Jonh will probably be able to explain this alot better than I can.

| Goulding needs to make a centre-winger relationship, so that each other know what's happening when. Half the times that I've seen him be "greedy" is when there has been no winger to pass to, as they are rarely on the same wavelength. Seriously, when was the last time Goulding had the same man outside of him for say... 5 matches in a row?

I'm not calling for his head and no-one supports young Wigan players more than I do.
But don't bury your heads in the sand. Gouldings poor decision making was a major contribution in the defeat last Friday.
That was the point of my post. IMO it was a below average performance from him, or are we only allowed to criticise overseas or non local players?

No but we are allowed to give him a chance like we will be giving say Piggy Riddell a chance after his poor performances....

| I will back him to the hilt, as he is a player who will give his all, but personally i do not think he will make it and in truth never have.
He may be faster than some of our backs but he does not have pace to seperate him from the pack and make him a special player, he does not have exceptional strength nor does he have special size.
Top players always have something in there nal that sets them apart from other players, i do not personally think Goulding has.
Time is on his side and i hope he can make it but i think his time is running out at Wigan. I am sure he will have a future as a SL player, but not in a team wanting to challenge for honours.
S Tomkins has special agility and the ability to beat numerous players, he also has an excellent supporting brain which sets him apart from the pack. Joel has size and strength as well as very good hands and a great rugby brain, i really cannot see anything in Goulding that indicated he will be anything more than an average SL player.

| Goulding had the better of Yeaman all night.
The missed chance where Byrne hammered Goulding then needed the physio was when Goulding beat Yeaman, again, and looked round for Phelps. If Phelps had stayed on the outside he'd have had a walk in. Instead Phelps was behind Goulding coming inside. Goulding could well have scored but I could hear the thump of the contact between Goulding and Byrne and I was sat high in the stand.
That shook Byrne up for the rest of the game and he looked uncertain and shakey and we failed to take advantage.
Goulding has lost weight but I think he has regained some of his lost pace.
He should start v Cas with Roberts wingman, Richards to full back. Goulding and Roberts could make a very good centre wing partnership.
To suggest Goulding won't make it is far too early when he still qualifies for the U21s.
Yeaman will replace Senior in the England squad and Goulding gave him one bad night! The only time Yeaman made any ground was when he went dummy half and scooted from there.
Goulding must stay at 3 with Roberts his wing for many games yet before we see how they both go.

Why not blame Hock? didn't cover across for horne to step over, and tackled cusack like a turnstyle.
the TEAM wins and looses, and on friday and against wakefield the TEAM were sh***.
give goulding a chance FFS, he is 20, we are all creaming ourselves over Sam T i will give him a fortnight till some on here are on his back.
We need to accept it takes time for players to develop, you learn from experience, you need to make mistakes to learn from them. Leeds's wonderkid made one peach of a pass then looked average and nieve, you dont find many leeds fans slating him.
Judge goulding at the end of the season, not after 20 mins

Your probably right he is quite small. He still needs to be given a proper chance. A good run in the team.

I agree he should remain in the centre, but he has to make a mark this year for me, or at least show some of the promise he showed as he was coming through the system.
Unfortunately i do not think it is any great claim to be outplay Yeaman anymore, he has gone backwards in the last 2 year and has shown nothing like the form that earned him top try scorer (i think) and a GB call.

Even with a downturn in form the sad state of centres in this country means Yeaman is one of the better ones and to outplay him in the main is a decent scalp for Goulding especially in his first full game of the year.
He's had great games against the likes of Senior and Hape in the past aswell so he must have something about him.
He needs a good run in the side imo but i don't see that happening under Noble tbh.
