Quite a few of us Saints now supping pre matches in The Phoenix, near the Chapel House car dealership. Its a CAMRA pub. Usually have half a dozen or so cask ales on and cheap too. A leisurely 10 min stroll to Langtree Park. Dont bring too many in though its nice and easy to get served !! ( unlike the Glass House which is now bedlam on match days with the usual lack of staff in Spoons establishments.) They do have Sky Sports too for the Hull derby.

That may be a choice, but my son-in-law goes in there and he would have to buy me a pint if I did go, so I guess I'm barred.

I'm thinking of venturing in on the train.'"
I'm planning to go by train, and had all my times worked out after looking at online timetables....following the later reply on possible bus replacements, I emailed Northern Trains, who operate between Wigan NW and St Helens, and got this reply earlier...
"Our Reference NR/ 251804
Dear Mr xxxxxxx
Thank you for your e-mail, which I received recently.
I have checked an it is a normal train timetable for the 06/04/12 between Wigan and St Helens.
I trust this information will prove helpful.
Yours sincerely"
I did point out in my original email that I was going to the RL, so hope this helps.

| Try Bar Rifle on Duke St. A rugby league pub run by a Wigan season ticket holder and her St Helens season ticket holder boy friend. Bound to be good banter and the Hull derby will be on before. 15 mins walk to ground at tops from there.

| Quote: The Chair Maker "I would check if the trains are running on good friday into St.helens central as its been replacement bus service for a while due to engineering works while they fit overhead electric cabling between Huyton and Wigan.
This work will ultimately allow high speed electric trains to run from Liverpool via st.Helens and Wigan and then upto Preston and Scotland. Rather than as now having to make do with those slow smelly Pacer and Sprinter diesel trains.
Should make for more regular and faster train journeys between St.Helens and Wigan when finished in 2014
As for pubs, you have the whole town centre to go for. The Glass house will no doubt be rammed, so i would avoid that.
The George is worth a visit but will also be rammed.
The Counting House is a big pub with big screens only 10 mins from the ground. serves decent beer including real ale.
The Running horses is a Lloyds no1 bar and is big
Further afield real ale fans may like to try the Old England. Not as far as the Turks head to walk from only 15 mins from
the ground. You can get beer from £1.30 a pint
trains are back on now but it'll probarbly be a sunday service im goin on the train

Normally you can't but it'll be rammed now they've moved the ground pretty much next door to it. Won't be the same!

Has The Rifle re-opened? It was shut the last time I went past. Was a while ago though!

Re-opened just before Christmas. I go there quite often. Nothing special, just a boozer really. Decent prices though. £2 a pint bitter. They show all sky sports too. Not the biggest of pubs so I wouldn't go with a large group.
