| Quote: Catalancs "You wouldn't sign Billy Slater?
Billy is a very bad example as so much of his game is about speed - unlikely he'd have that at 30. And if you were talking about the Billy Slater of now, well it all depends what the wedge was.
I wouldn't have Jonathan Thurston for the money he's potentially looking at to stay at the cowboys.

First name that came to mind. Darren Lockyer, Adrian Morley, Jamie Peacock. Ask the Bradford fans if Steve Menzies age is a problem.
Stacey Jones and Ruben Wiki were class players way after they'd hit 30.

| It's very difficult when trying to asses making a player a contract offer at 32 years of age, especially if you have differing views about his ability to deliver over the contract period.
Nobody can argue for example that Long and Cunningham haven't performed to the full level that was expected of them at the start of the season, and Long particularly missed a lot more games due to injury than could have been even reasonably expected.
Leeds are going to have to make exactly these types of choices with the likes of Peacock and Senior, and I very much doubt they'll be offered the same sort of contract they would have been offered if they were still 29 or just turning 30.

And for every Darren Lockyer etc, there's a few dozen players who are done and dusted during that age range. Like i said it's a balancing act.
We have absolutely no idea what Carmont is looking for as a deal, but it would be extremely silly not to consider his age as factor in the contract being offered.

| Carmont's age and ability are just 2 of a number of factors, most of which we know nothing about.
Does anybody on here know how much George has been offered? Or what he's after? Or if he's been offered a 1 + 1 but wants a 2? Or if he wants a 1 + 1 but the club will only offer a flat 1? Or the details of any medical reports on George? Or the expected recovery time of any surgery? Or the risk of failure of any surgery?
NO. So lets stop asuming/blaming/accusing/presuming.

Hang on a minute. The poster said we should fire off players when they reach 30. I think that is plain daft. Things like performance, fitness and current ability should take presidence over age when deciding whether to keep a player at the club. Getting rid of a good player who consistently performs simply because he happens to have turned 30 makes about as much sense as a bag of frogs.

| Now that the coaching situ has been settled, it's amazing to sit here and watch as certain groups of Wigan fans slowly but surely manufacture the next club crisis - without knowing anything about George Carmont's medical reports, his wages demands, who we may have got lined up to replace him, etc.
Truly amazing.
Why don't we just wait until we actually KNOW something?

Is true... But read what Bridger wrote... Is not as cut and dried as you might think either... Truth is that MM will probably be making the decision.
It used to be said that "You never get a pension at Wigan", We need to keep it fresh... BTW I'm a massive fan of George Carmont.... Been our most consistant player for some time..

Actually I think the point I'm making is very cut and dry. You don't get rid of a good player just because he turns 30. I'm not talking about anyone in particular here.

Surely the wage and the rest of the team must come into play though!
I would not want us to sign Lockyer or a player like that now as it would hold back Sam Tomkins but in the situation we are in now, Menzies or an old prop to play in our young pack would be perfect, signing players is so situational you cannot just make comments like "oh we should sign such a person" or "he is too old we cannot sign him".

Same thing. The only difference being the player has played for the team before and may fit in better, you must still consider all the same things.

So you agree to throw someone out purely based on age is insane?
