That's a little unfair, there were some lovely moves set up that the 3/4 bombed. They were very quick out of the line to Sam as well a couple of times to stop him passing it on.

Huddersfield should have been easily beaten with that side but Wigan were completely lacking any ideas.
It's only one game, so there's no reason to get carried away, but there are an awful lot of reasons to be very concerned.'"
Agree with that. We got into good positions but didn't have the creativity to take advantage. Hudds had Sam under wraps for most of the game. I think he should be looking to move into the halves to take more control of the game.

| I said immediately after the Salford friendly that the 1st team needed another warm up game before the season started and should have played against Leigh. They looked clueless in attack. I've read a lot about this attacking rugby we're supposed to be seeing this year but seen little evidence of it. One of Mellor, Powell or Logan need to start getting some game time now, shuffling everyone round to spell McIlorum DOESNT WORK, we've seen it so many times.

| Time to ditch Mcillorum. He simply isn't Wigan standard.

He was world class for the first 40. I've not seen them but I'm guessing you'll be blown away by his stats. Problem is he's a very different hooker to Tommy, the key is to make the most of them both in that position and to tactically manage them appropriately.
To do that though we need another half back. Maybe get Sam back in there and start Russ at FB - but I'll guarantee they'll start Mellor there first .

From what I saw the moves were fairly basic. A dummy runner or two, a link between the halves looking for Tomkins. The moves weren't executed well enough to create an overlap so when the ball went out to the outside backs there wasn't much they could do because there wasn't much space.

Sorry but I stopped reading after you said McIlorum was 'World Class' he will never be world class, never. Today wasnt his worst game but that is the biggest overstatement I have ever read on these boards.
I think as the game progressed we started to show what we could do & if it had gone on any longer we would have won. Someone hit the nail on the head saying we needed another pre season game after the Salford match.
Standouts for me were, Mossop (he was outstanding for me but he always seems to get injured), and Lima. No-one else really stood out to be honest.
We simply need to play Leuluai at hooker and chuck a youngster in at the deep end, its now or never really, Leuluai cant kick but is world class from dummy half. Wasnt really impressed with the two debutants Lauaki and Flower.
The difference today was simply Danny Broughs kicking game.

| It's been a worrying couple of matches with us looking to have more questions then answers but hopefully we'll sort it.
I remember sitting at Cardiff 12 months back watching last seasons league leaders get walloped against Huddersfield and Wire were terrible that day. That goes to show it can be turned round but I think they'll need to change the side a little.

| McIlorum was very poor. I've rarely seen a hooker who has so little influence in attack. It seems his only trick is the less than inspiring dummy and run, which gets a few metres but seems to be used when a pass would be the better option.
We looked better in attack with Leuluai at hooker and also with O'Loughlin at stand off. Leuluai didn't link well with Finch at all, possibly because his passing game isn't consistently strong (he does put some good passes in though). With two good passers down the middle we looked stronger.

True, but I think a lot of credit goes to the Giants defence, especially out wide. One noticeable lack was that the second rows weren't sucking in the opposition centres as Hoffman, in particular, used to do, so the coverage was always man-on-man outside. I'd have expected Hock to succeed in that role, but apart from the one late break, and one earlier by Faz, it never worked.

| Anyone else worried about the fitness of the players this year? Wane wanted them bulked up but a couple looked unfit to me.

No some of them didn't, there wasn't much urgency for some of the players to get back in to position either. They needed another game pre-season!!!

| It's a disappointing start, that's for sure. Aside from our poor kicking game, our handling was awful in the first half and we barely created any field position. Personally I was more worried by the way in which an under-strength Giants side closed us down around the edges and bullied us down the middle with ball in hand.
We shouldn't jump to conclusions after one game but some players' weaknesses have been clear for a couple of seasons now - we know McIIorum isn't a creative hooker (although him and Hansen worked overtime in defence today), Tommy's passing game isn't good enough for a half-back and Hock simply doesn't seem to learn, his wild offloads/loose carrying accounted for at least three uncompleted sets early on.
Of course we were not helped by the referee who allowed the Giants to slow down the ruck and did his usual trick of blowing the whistle selectively when we had good field position. But the truth is, the Giants played with more fire in attack and defence - and we should not have been in a position where we were starved of decent field position for long periods.
I also wondered why we had three very similar types of player on the bench in Tuson, Flower and Farrell - although the last one was one of our best today. Tuson and Flower are both grafters, but surely we have a young half-back who could add some spark from the bench? (I don't watch the under 20s so have no idea whether Mellor et al are ready for SL)
