Play up, Wigan
GO THE FACKIN KIWIS: |
|
| Quote: Bridger "I can't believe the flak this bloke is getting and he's never played a match for us!
At the end of the day, he's been a starting centre in the NRL for 3 seasons. How many of the centres in last seasons SL would have done that?
Lets re-analyse next September, shall we? '"
No, that'll be done the evening of 9 February

| To be honest i think most fans like myself are addopting a wait and see policy.
Speaking from the facts we have he has not got a great career behind him and looking at his age has not get a great one in front of him, the latter part of that statement is what bothers me and is why i would be much happier if we had signed him to a 1 year deal.
I am also of the opinion that we wont really be able to say if he was a good signing until the final signing is announced and the squad is completed.

Possibly because, unlike many of those Wigan fans who say he is, Noble's actually seen him play and been able to make an informed judgement.

| Quote: Cruncher "
One accusation that fans of other clubs regularly aim at Wigan fans is that we bag our own players too much. I'm sick of arguing about this, because - on the evidence of this thread - it's basically true. '"
No its not. Wigan fans are no worse than any others in this respect. All fans of all clubs have differing opinions of various players.
Quote: Cruncher "It's also highly embarrassing, though no more so than the 'Wigan standard' myth that so many arrogant fans still trot out whenever we sign someone who isn't an obvious world-beater.'"
Why is it embarrassing to debate the merits of a new signing? Isn't that what everyone does at all clubs? I am with you on the "Wigan standard" thing though.
Quote: Cruncher "I don't know what world some Wigan fans live in. They've been blasting Fielden all season, apparently oblivious to the fact that he's been injured AND doing the work of two men (the other being one of their darlings - the overrated Feka). And now they've decided this new guy is 2h1te, even though most of them have never seen him play.
Whatever happened to closing ranks or showing solidarity with our own? For Heaven's sake, if Carmont really does turn out to be crap, then have your day then. Until that day, give the poor guy a chance - he's wearing our colours and representing our side. At least respect him for that.'"
Fair points. I myself will adopt the "wait and see" attitude. I am in favour of us signing an experienced centre because of the flexibility it gives in the squad and means Goulding doesn't get pushed in too early.

| Quote: AP Wannnabee "And that is were things in common ends between these two Aussies. The bloke is not fit to lace Jamie Lyons boots.
Couple of things......
1. Whose boots was Jamie Lyon "fit to lace" before he came over here ??? He was a pig-shooting EX-NRL player before he came to Saints. Admittedly, he went on to star in the team, but what had he done up to that point in the NRL - he was never a "star-player", and come to think of it, what has he done since going back ???? (The word Over-rated seems to get thrown at him quite a bit recently)
2. If George can tackle, run and give more than 1 pass per game (successfully) to his winger, then he is already BETTER than DV, who he has replaced, and for less (much less) money.
I bagged him at first, on the basis of the "mixed" reports from Knights fans, but as has been pointed out, Trent Barrett was "well shut of", "crocked", "past it", "mercenary", "ready for retirement" and "shïte" when he came over.
For that reason, I will reserve any judgement until he has played several matches for us.
However, thinking about it, I can't see how I can come to a negative conclusion.
As I stated above, if he can make 1 of each (tackle, pass, run) in a match where his contract is NOT on the line, then he is giving us MORE than DV, for a fraction of the salary.
Any judgements on this lad's ability/effort HAVE to be viewed in the light of "What would DV have done ???"
(we all know the answer to that - Dropped it, knocked on, held on too long or just not been there in the first place)
Let's just wait and see, shall we ????

| But that was the problem.
"The right attitude" for DV was "Oh shït. My contract's nearly finished - Better show some effort for a couple of weeks"

If nothing else, the good thing about Carmont is that he's joining us a lot more cheaply than DV did.
Contrary to mischievous but frankly idiotic comments from trouble-making trolls, he is not a straight replacement for Danny Hill. He is, as Dave O has said, essential cover for a first team shirt that would otherwise be vacant (Hill is no centre, and nor, if we're honest, is Phil Bailey).
He is also, I'm led to believe, part of a much larger scheme. If the rumours are true, his capture will only really be appreciated in a couple of weeks' time, when (or if) IL finds that he has successfully freed enough cap space to make a third signing.
