| Quote: SaintsFan "Of course not. But I was talking about the relative strengths and weaknesses of Charnley and Foster, not Pat Richards and Foster because I made it clear that I thought comparing Richards and Foster was ludicrous. They're at opposite ends of their careers, as I said. So my point was about Charnley and Foster.'"
And I still maintain that Charnley is the better winger,as his stats show. If you disagree, then in what way do you think that Foster is better?

I don't follow stats alone because they can be misleading, regardless of the position. Roby's stats are out of this world but he plays 80 minutes every match and so he's bound to be streets ahead in things like metres made. I don't know if any other team plays one hooker for 80 minutes? I'm not aware of it anyway.
I don't know Charnley enough to say he's better or worse than Foster; just as Wigan fans don't know Foster enough to say he's better or worse than Charnley. But one poster listed a few things that they considered made Charnley better than Foster. The only difference between Charnley and Foster on the basis of that little list was that Charnley is bigger and stronger than Foster, but the former is blatently obvious and I seconded the latter. It is also bound to affect the relative chances of go forward on kick returns. Our substitute winger on the other side, Makinson, is younger than Foster but he has stronger legs and is of a bigger build generally so pushes two or three players back each time. However, he is less experienced in the position and gets caught out defensively sometimes.

| But Charnley also makes more tackles, so you would assume he works harder than Foster.

His stats are also better than Gardners
rlhttp://www.superleague.co.uk/statistics_player.php?hs1
And much better than Makisnsons.

Yes by 1, but he's played more games, is older and is more "experienced "using SaintsFans theory.

To be fair not seen much of Charnley this year. But I'm happy the way Foster is developing. He has improved our goal kicking ability no end, and has also proved very useful with the kickoffs. Add to this his obvious try scoring ability and the imessurable improvement to meli under the high ball.
He has improve the wing no end for us.

Exactly. We're happy with him. Glad the Goons don't want him.

Charnley is far more powerful and dynamic than Foster can ever be genetically.
Both are good players, but I do not see where Foster can go to in his career with his natural limitations, you can't coach him that special extra yard of pace, he is not going to get any taller, he is never naturally going to be a powerful line breaker.
Footwork and positioning can be coached so he will probably go on to improve in this area, but realistically his physical limitations in my opinion will hold him back where Charnley has the potential to excel, due to him being naturally bigger stronger and more powerful with more pace.
He is just a far superior athlete.

Spot on, as I said, Foster poses no threat from more than 20 yards from the line, Charnley is dangerous from all areas of the pitch, he's bigger, stronger, faster, a better defender.Foster is probably slightly better under the high ball. Overall Charnley is far superior.

I didn't at any point disagree that Foster is physically less strong than Charnley, did I? In fact, I have stated quite clearly that this is a difference and it has a bearing on kick returns because of the strength needed to push defenders back as well as goal line defence. This weakness in Foster is acknowledged by all Saints fans. It's not something he can help, though. As you suggest, it's genetics.

Oh, Foster is fast. In fact, he really surprised us against the Crusaders, I think it was, when he made a hurtling run to catch a breakaway attack. He caught up and was fast. That was the first time any of us had seen him run flat out. He's about 6ft (187cm). How much taller does he need to be? The line breaking thing is again to do with his natural physique.
Quote: jonh "Footwork and positioning can be coached so he will probably go on to improve in this area'"
He has fantastic positioning sense. You really haven't seen him play much, have you!

| Id rather have Charnley but Foster is a good up and coming player, and could be awesome in a few years if he bulks up a bit if you ask me for kick returns etc.
