| In the grand scheme of things 6 matches is about right. I say this after every serious piece of foul play I see on the pitch and I'll say it again, I think the disciplinary are soft and consistently don't hand out long enough bans.

In the sense that it's probably the most we could realistically have hoped for, yes, I agree.
ISTR that when there was a lengthy thread on this topic not long back, there was general agreement amongst fans of all clubs that punishments were too lenient.

| Quote: Smooth Stu "I don't think the 'vitriol' on here is at all childish. I think it is warranted in the light of what everyone, including a lot of Leeds fans, can see was a deliberate act designed to injure another player.
Which is the opposite of the McGuire incident
You do not recall correctly actually, if you watch it back McGuire's leg knocks into Carmont's (causing the injury) and he grabs out after the injury (Mags claims this was to try maintain his feet) which was still a foul and a deserved penalty but couldn't really be called 'self inflicted' injury as you state
This is of course more logical as well as a 2010 McGuire could have easily outpaced Carmont anyway
This means little to anyone except of course McGuire himself, who took great insult to be called a cheat by Phil Clarke, though I expect you dont care.
Im only posting this because I felt that Clarke was really unfair in his address after the game and it seems to have shaped the opinion of Wigan fans since, it is this attitude that he somehow deserved to be injured which I find particularly ugly

| Quote: The Magic Rat "I hope Gildart makes a full recovery and Ferres is rightly banned. I do think Wigans medical team and coaching staff have questions to answer though regarding putting him back on the field for a couple of minutes after half time to ensure they didn't lose an interchange. If indeed that was the reason. What could have happened to Gildart if he had been required to make a tackle in the time he was on the field?
Although the extent of the injury was not known at that stage it was obvious to us at the game and tv viewers that he was in a lot of pain and should not have been on the pitch.'"
This!
Ferres' intent can't be known by anyone except ferres. But it was reckless, and deserves a big ban. As were wigans actions. They could have caused more serious damage.

| Ferres deserved a long ban. I'd say there's more "intent" in a sustained action like a crusher tackle than say a swinging arm, as there's time for the tackler to realise what's going on and stop doing it (or at least try to). Its amazing how these sorts of tackles come into the game, and then miraculously disappear once long bans start getting handed out.

I've just read Ferres submission to the RFL panel where he is basically blaming Gildart for the injury. Unbelievable really. He says he didn't lift him but that Gildart drives upwards lifting himself, Ferres and Ablett!!
More of a maggot that I thought!
Player accompanied by Assistant Coach Barry Eaton. Player pleads guilty to dangerous contact offence but challenges the level of the grading at Grade E. No malice or intent to injure the opponent. Player has had contact with opponent after the game and expressed sympathy for the injury. The club and coaching staff do not employ any techniques of foul play. Opponent is smaller in stature and turns into the tackle. Unable to turn the player to his right of left. Opponent drives upwards with his legs into the player’s midriff. Tackling player had his legs spread and could not lift in this position Tackling player loses his grip and with a team mate adding weight on his back there was nothing else he could do other than go to ground. Player did not know where opponents head was. He was trying to get on top of opponent. - See more at: www.rugby-league.com/the_rfl

Honestly don't know what to make of that. Obviously you say a few things that bend the truth a bit to try and get a bit of leniency, but i don't think anything he said in his defence is true. Except maybe that Gildart is smaller than him.
Also, how is a tackling player trying to use the excuse "i didnt know where his head was"? Surely duty of care involves knowing where your opponents head is.
Had to chuckle at "The amount of weight involved for the tackled player to lift with two opponents on him would not be possible."

I'm not surprised or bothered by this. In principle it's like any court case where the defendant and their representatives argue their case as best they can to get as lenient a sentence as possible. I've got no doubt that we and every other club do the same.

Yeah, I always enjoy reading them to be fair. I remember Joel Tomkins smashing someone with a forearm and arguing that he had bumped someone off before by promoting the ball, and the only reason he caught the guy in the face this time is that he was smaller. He didn't win that one.
On the one hand, there is blatant lying, and on the other hand he was never going to say "yeah i squished him good", so i guess you should always aim somewhere in the middle.

| I have no problem with Leeds defending Ferres. It is best not to start taking the 'high moral ground' in these matters. Everyone deserves a defence.
I think Shaun Wane handled the situation, after the game, perfectly. Though it beggars belief that Ollie was pushed out there in the second half (I don't know who that was down to). Anyway, for once, he didn't inflame the situation, he didn't annoy the other coach, and he didn't annoy the RFL.
Let's just hope it doesn't effect Gildart in the long term, because the injury sounds horrific.
