although they are very different types of player, i would have to say that Pryce is/has been a more of a game breaker than Deac's. A bit of a one trick pony IMO, but a game breaker none the less.
However in the current Wigan setup, Deacon is far, far more integral to the game we play. TBH where would we play Pryce?. likewise there is no way that Deacon would get in the Saints side.
It was the Jeff lima / LMS* comparison that got me scratching my head.
This thread has really added to tonights buildup!

Can't really compare the two, as they're very different players. Deacs admittedly doesn't have the individual skills of Pryce, but he's a much better organiser, is more consistent (even Saints fans admit LP "goes missing" in games quite often), reads a game better, and has a far superior kicking game. As tuggles points out, he fits our scheme a lot better than Pryce would.
I certainly wouldn't swap them.

Seriously? Deacon in his pomp maybe but not now. I'd have Pryce all day long!

The key factor for me is Deacs' medium/long kicking game - something that our other halves have struggled with recently.

I'd agree, but the basis of this discussion is who has the stronger side, not who'd fit into our system better, and there's no question Pryce is a better player these days.

Fair enough.
Getting back to the original thread topic, though, I might change my vote after today's first game.

| After todays games i see no reason to change my mind.
St.Helens will be right up there imo even though today they were below par by their standards.

| Quote: saintnickle34 "Wellens is a better fullback than tomkins. You mention younger and fitter ,but what about the one on one defence, positional play, ability to read the game and coolness under the high ball .These are all the traits of a great fullback.
I would rather have shenton over gleeson
Meli over Roberts
Price is better than deacon
Eastmond has the potential to be a great the same as your implying about farrell
we havent seen enough of lima to make a judgement .
Roby is a country mile better than mcillorum
Graham is better than anything wigan have.
Soliola has only played a handfull of games in superleague but is a kiwi international and has done it in the nrl.So thats why i am picking him over tomkins who has potential but is a penalty machine.
Wilkin is a good player for saints as i9s oloughlin for wigan so we arent going to agree there.
Clough is a better player than mossop and has the potential to be even better.
Puletua over tuson anyday .
I will accept that farrell has the potential but it is only that .dixon when hes played has been steady for saints.
The rest are too close to call,[/q
After watching last nights game i think i will be proven right on most of the above.
For the recent poster who stated that they would rather have deacon instead of pryce shows you are never going to win an argument on this board. MOM by a country mile was roby..Utterly superb in both attack and defence.
Saints core of wellens
Pryce Eastmond
Perry Roby Graham is the best in superleague.

Right time to pick apart another of your posts.
How did last nights game prove that Deacon was Better than Pryce? Deacon only played 20 minutes and Pryce didn't even play!
Nobody here claimed Roby to be a bad player, it was your other comparisons that were Ludicrous. Wellens was awful last night, slow, indecisive, cost you a try!
To say you core of:
wellens
Pryce Eastmond
Perry Roby Graham
Is the best in SL when almost half those players didn't play! Pryce & Perry that is BTW. How can you make a judgement like that without seeing them play for your club?!
Come on mate, just talk sense, if you actually posted something intelligent, with valid points people wouldn't mock you as much!

| I also thought Graham was poor last night, no where near as effective and TP or Soliola.

Graham was playing with a back problem, for which he had an injection to enable him to play. Clearly he wasn't himself.
Wello may have a recurrence of the rib injury that he sustained towards the end of last season and which may now need an operation. I think Foster will be his stand in.
We missed Pryce for his organisation and guile. Eastmond has been out too long and was therefore very rusty. But I was pleased he made it through a fully 80 minutes, including attempting some kicks.
We were underdone going into that game because of a very disrupted pre-season, new coach with new ideas still bedding in and a new-look team (not to mention the lack of Pryce to organise). Had we not been underdone, chances are we would have beaten you, and beaten you by a number of tries too. You may think it was penalties that cost you, but don't forget the number of times we crossed your line in the first half. Had we not fluffed those opportunities we would have secured anything between two and four tries before you even scored a point.
I am sure both Wigan and Saints will get better as the season progresses.

You talk about injuries but we had Fielden, Finch, Fielden, Roberts and the current man of steel out with Richards too. If they had played we would have beaten you as we had to jig about also. Bear in mind our off/pre season has been very disrupted with injuries also, so we we underdone?
