| Quote: Paul Youane "There is a difference between "technical" breaches that it could be argued Saints and Bradford did and actually have "under-the-counter" contracts that are different to the ones being declared to the salary cap auditors. Clubs that do that are blatantly cheating and should be punished in the manner that Melbourne have.
Surely we can all agree on that?'"
What you mean is every team other than mine caught cheating should be punished, no such thing as a technically cheating, your either a pound over the limit, or your not.

Nope.
It all depends on voting paterns imo. Why should the Storm be dictated to by the other teams?
For example i know under Whelan and Mo Wigan voted for the cap to rise but the lesser ambitious teams such as Cas, Hudds, Wakey & Salford held us and the game back by voting it down. Why should they be able to do this?
In that situation, imo, it’s ok to do the underhand stuff.
Now if Melbourne voted for the system and then cheated it it’s bang out of order.
All this episode proves to me is that the cap isn’t working and needs to be raised.

| I do like the line of thinking that appears prevalent on this thread of 'the rules are being broken, let's get rid of the rules' perhaps we should do the same with other offences such as robbery and murder? 'Many people do it, so f*ck it, let's just get rid of the law that attempts to prevent it'.
The players were obviously in on it, they had to sign the contracts that were fraudulent, as were the coaching staff in all likelyhood, but I can't see many coming over here. Too many of them have international ambitions and with the exchange rate being poor and the overseas tax loophole being closed, it isn't as profitable to come over here now.
I also think we may see bigger penalties being imposed on SL clubs for SC breaches now there is no relegation. A large points penalty would not ruin a club like it would had they been relegated because of it.

Why would a Warrington fan talking about Saints and Bradford being saying that? Given the pages of qualifications and rules on the cap I would suggest it isn't as simple as 'you're a pound over, lose all points'
However, having two contracts to hide your cheating is as simple as that.

Dont care who he supports, there is an overwhelming sense of hollier than thou, when it comes to teams we support, and we are all guilty. Should we have been punished in 06 when the rfl said we didnt break the cap? Were you on then saying its only technical so let them off? Or was that cheating?
Its simple every club knows how much they can spend, so if you go over, your over, dont matter how you do it!
I dont think the cap is a good thing how it is, you should be rewarded for certian things not punished for producing talent when other teams cant be bothered as they understand you cant keep them all.

Yeah cause breaking a salary cap is even comparable to murder and robbery. Do you honestly think that’s a valid point to make?
There is a massive jump between someone sympathising with the Storm club for breaking an out of date rule like the SC and someone trying calling for the murder laws to be repealed.
It’s obvious the SC needs re adjusting as the Storm have to do things like this to keep its top players. Again I can’t see how anyone can say the Storm don’t deserve to keep every player they’ve trained, developed and invested in just because they’ve had success? It’s a backward rule that penalises teams like the Storm who not only produce top players like Inglis, Smith, Slater etc as well as turning also rans like Lima into world class ones. They’ve invested in getting the best out of these players and should be able to maximise the rewards of it for as long as they want.

| So by my reckoning they overpaid their whole team for the whole of 2009 by less than Frank Lampard earmns in 3 weeks (£420k) - if they have the money and can sustain a club let them pay it to the players!

I do agree with your last paragraph though! I just cant ever agree that if you dont like the rules you should be allowed to break them!

It took a little longer for something like this to appear than I expected, but in the end a Saints fan didn't disappoint.

| Personally I wouldn't want any. I think the days of highly paid world class players coming here are long gone. We need to invest in our own youth and I'd rather see us bringing through our own potentially world class players than buying Aussies on a big wage!

But the problem arises when your own world class players want world class wages, and the Cap dictates that they can't have them unless they go somewhere else.

Again it’s not like I’m talking about murder, insurance or theft laws I’m talking about a sporting cap which holds a business/club back for the benefits of its competitors.
The points you agree with show the rules are plainly wrong and don’t favour the clubs doing GOOD for the game. Let’s not beat around the bush with this one the SC holds back the strong clubs, the ones that do good for the game by producing the likes of Smith, Inglis & Slater the ones that invest in top class coaches and methods.
If it punishes the good for the benefit of the lazy then the Storm are well in their rights to refuse to adhere to it. There is a term in politics called the tyranny of the majority which says what is right for the majority isn’t always the correct thing. Apartheid was voted in but isn’t acceptable same goes for slavery laws in the 60’s as well.
