| My understanding is that Thornley has not made the progress that was expected of him. That's not to say I've heard that he's left - I haven't, but I have heard that Marsh is now seen as the next centre up from our academy, and Charnley is catching the eye as well (to say the least).

I posted that about Thornley earlier in the year, but qualified it by saying that he was still at sixth form college, and that it would be better to judge him next year when he was in full time training at Wigan.
Before I retired one of my colleagues sons was signed by Sale and they "sorted" out a University place for him. Maybe they have done something similar for Thornley. Good luck to him in whichever path he chooses.

| I thought that him and Charnley were going to form an International partnership for England in the future?
Now, I'm not being funny but one doesn't go from this quote (don't ask me where it came from, but I saw it) and then brush it off in a matter of days.
Sad loss if he that international potential...

It's not a matter of days.
Thornley and Marsh were Wigan's two centres-in-waiting about 12 months ago. Since then, the junior members of the squad have been carefully evaluated by Michael Maguire and decisions have been made over a period of months. The ones who've made notable steps have either featured on and off in the Wigan first team, or have been sent out to other clubs, where for the most part they have caught good notices. Sad to say, but Thornley is not one of them.

| The Scum newspaper suggests both Marsh and Thornley are off to Sale.

| I really hope this isn't true. To lose one is bad enough, but to lose two of our brightest youngsters is terrible news.
If it is true then why the move? Purely for financial reasons, or the eventual chance to play in front of large crowds at internationals?

The fact that Brian Noble is being given credit for where Wigan are now says all we need to know about the guy quoted in that particular story.
Marsh needs a new contract at the end of the year. So the bit about him sounds like agent talk. The other fella, I don't feel, would be a massive loss. We ought to remember that not everyone can take the kind of regime the Wigan players now live under.

Well the author is Dave "Nosey" Parker who is never right. Still insisting Vaealiki is off to Harlequins no doubt.

| Always disappointing to lose players to Yawnion but even worse when they are 18 and 19 years of age. i was hoping that this sort wouldn't happen under the current setup esp with all the talk of signing more Aussies/Kiwis.

| Im sure madge has shown the attitude of if you want to play for wigan prove yourself or theres the door. If thornley turned down our contract offer let him go.
I'd be more reluctant about letting marsh go however. But charnley seems to be the one who is excelling at the minute.

That might be due to the fact that he's only just finished at sixth form and it was decided, as another poster has said, that he will be held off first team or any type of loan deal until that finishes. I'm surprised people are brushing this off so easily. The lad has bags of talent, as is shown by Sale possibly having offered him a big contract without him ever playing first team. I wouldn't just take this as agent talk either, they've been sniffing around since he was 15/16.

I doubt it's just agent talk where Thornley's concerned. But if he goes, he goes. There are bags of talented kids in our junior ranks, and though it would be nice to keep them all, we simply can't. Thus Maguire and co have to make decisions, based on performances, attitude etc, about which ones to keep.
Those who score lower on the chart can't possibly be allowed to hold the club to ransom. This would not be a loss on a par with Ashton, who was a regular first-teamer at the time, catching the eye of the world. Thornley has never get close to the first team in a league or cup match. If the likes of Sale want to throw daft money at someone like that, they can be my guests.

| Never watched Thornley play but from what I gather about him on here it seems he is the best centre to come through the ranks in a long time, it's sad to have good players leave as Thornley could replace Carmont in another year or so but if Wigan have offered him a deal and he has knocked it back then so be it.
I'm sure if he really has that potential the IL and MM and the coaching staff will see it and offer a better deal for him to stay, same goes for Marsh.
