He was overrated, irrespective of talent comparisons to other players.

He played Origin m8. Our current halves would get nowhere near Origin.
In fact they would struggle to get close to Origin under 16's.

I agree they wouldn't and he's definitely better than we've got now. I just don't think he was as good as some people made out, that's all. Even Jamie Aincough played Origin and he was cack!

Ainscough was decent when played on the wing and played a significant part in Winning the Challenge Cup in 2002 with his interception and a crucial tackle on Long.
Admittedly he did like a smoke though

Check google then tell me what happened to him after his second origin game..!!!
Yes, dropped for playing APPALLINGLY
Dont get me wrong Finchy was okay, i dont want to get too into bashing him but he wasn't the player that some people raved about. And yes you can compare him to Barrett who had a great 4 games for us in 2 seasons... Finchy had 5

| I'm with the captain... Both were very talented players, but, Finch was coasting, and so was Barrett, but to a lesser extent. I don't miss either.

| I agree finch was coasting but barrett was carrying the rest of the average lot at the time and without him wouldn't have had a couple of fond 2007 memories

Trent Barrett was brilliant for Wigan, he was so skilful in attack and also strong in defence and add to that he was also a leader who inspired those around him.
Barretts failure to land the Man Of Steel practically tuned the award into a joke such was his dominance in Super League.
If I remember rightly Sam Tomkins paid tribute to Barretts influence on him following his first full game for Wigans first team.
World class.

| Seems more plausible to pay respect to Barrett that Smith, perhaps he thinks everyone older than him needed it saying. Mathers?

| i remember Tim Smith's debut against huddersfield when we got done 34-4 at home in a shambles of a match, smithy came on as a sub and right away you could see his touch and awareness was fantastic.. i think Barrett was the better player but Barrett, Smithy or Finch were certainly not great players for WIGAN!! although to be fair, Finch won a trophy unlike Barrett and Smithy.
Barrett didnt carry a team of average players as someone suggested, he was just part of a poorly coached side, most of the team Barrett played in won the GF in 2010.
Mark Riddell was the best aussie recruit weve signed in the last 7 or 8 years possibly barring Pat, not Trent or Brett

| Wasn't Finch going to take this up in the 2014 season when he was at Wigan?

Dobbo for my money, not the best player but certainly the best recruit. We'd have been relegated without him. He's a Wigan legend as far as I am concerned.
Best player - Barrett, though in 2010 Pat Richards was absolutely superb, a sustained period of consistently world class wing play that any of the modern greats of the game would have been proud of.
As for Finch, you'd be forgiven for thinking he retired in August 2012!
Very good player up to that point but one of a number whose form dipped as we approached the business end of the season.
