Given that you've got Myler, Ratchford and O'Brien in the team I think it's fair to say there would be a few eyebrows raised, unless it had already been agreed that you were signing him for next year, in which case it would make a lot more sense.

You make a very interesting point. Wire have options if we'd lost Briers. Do Wigan ? Clearly not. I tried to think of another irreplaceable player in response and I couldn't. If you lose Sam, then what ? He's ever present which can't be healthy.

Absolutely nothing. We all know however that you'd have been more likely to sign Wally Lewis.

How a Wire fan can criticise our transfer policy is baffling. Out the 19 man squad on Sunday 13 of them have come through our academy, 13 are eligible for England and IIRC 17 are under 30. Not exactly robbing smaller clubs of their stars are we??

If we lost Sam we would play Matty Russell or Jack Murphy at full back.

Here's another.

Quote: Saville Row "Warrington have confirmed the signing of Australian star Andrew Johns on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
Johns, widely recognised as the best player in the world, has been given permission by Newcastle Knights to join the Wolves in September.
The 31-year-old will make his Wolves debut against Leeds on September 11 and will stay with the club until the end of the season.
Warrington hope the sensational capture of Johns can propel them to a place in the Super League Grand Final.'"

That's has to be the lowest point of any signings a SL club has done. At least we are keeping hold of Matty Smith for a while not a few hours as Wire did. At least most Wire fans with a brain in their had can understand why we have gone and signed Smith earlier than we wished to. We have an injury crisis that is starting to improve but we need another scrum half and with Smith joining in October makes sense to get him early and give Salford some money.

As for if we lost Sam ironically one of our best players last week was Murphy who impressed in attack and in defence. Sam's replacement is already here. We can cover virtually any position with quality apart from hooker and scrum half. But talking sense to someone who slags us off is a waste of time. We have more academy players in our side than all SL sides i would guess. And 3 of them are World Class.

Why folk are entertaining a Wire troll beats me.

Can we not be grown up for once and have this thread full of WIGAN FANS giving their opinions on Smith?
So bloody frustrating this site.

Good news on signing but where will he play when Tommy is back?

I guess one of them will interchange with MM at hooker.

Unbelievable bickering on here over this signing!

I'm a Salford fan (for my sins) and after having time to think about it, the move makes complete and utter sense in every way. I was a little perplexed at 1st as I think were pretty much giving up on the season but being a realist our chances of making the 8 are very slim anyway. Were receiving a transfer fee and losing his wages for the remainder of the season and it's not exactly a secret that were really struggling with our finances. If we don't have the funds to make any big signings next season (again, looks likely given our financial situation) then it's a good chance for young Sneyd to come in and get a good run of games in view of him being our permanent starter next season. Hey, we may even get to see a 47 year old Sean Long pull on Reds shirt for a few games!

I like Smith, he's solid if unspectacular but organises things extremely well. He'll also look a lot better behind a vastly superior pack to ours. Don't think many Salford fans will feel as wronged about the move as the Wire fan seems to be for some reason!

Best of luck to Matty, genuinely hope he goes well for you guys.
