| Quote: Cherry.Pie "The answer would probably be different for each word. It's strange that a lot of swear words refer to things that are completely natural with regards to humans and their nature. F**k, c**t, s**t, d*ck, tw*t, w**ker. Seems to have a lot to do with a bizarre prudishness with regards to sex and bodily functions.
Why those words are deemed more offensive than a word like torture which describes something awful and despicable I'll never know. To me it doesn't make much sense.
I'm not sure whether the words censored with asterisks will be allowed. If they are then it's a bit weird because people know what the word is and they still read it as if the word was there. A newspaper could get away with swearing using asterisks and it's commonly used to censor words. It still conveys the same meaning though. What if someone wrote the words f-c-u-k? C-n-u-t? Would it still be offensive because it's conveying the same meaning, or is it the spelling that's offensive? What if someone replacing the swear word with a similar sounding word? Is fluck off offensive?
Why is f*** offensive but 'coitus' not when they have the same meaning? Why is excrement fine but s*** is terrible when used to describe the same thing?
I surely can't be the only person who thinks the whole idea of 'swear words' is completely ridiculous and nonsensical.'"
It's flipping ridiculous.

| This is to the original poster.. Where have you been over the years.. The songs we sing have always had these words. .. I have a 9yr old who has watched Wigan home n away from 3 weeks.. She knows the words are swearing but sings her own words instead.. As she knows she isn't allowed to say them... I don't like them much myself but am not going to complain about the odd word..all you need to do is tell your kids they will hear naughty words and should ignore them.. Worked for my daughter.

| Quote: EastStandFaithful "From what I saw at the game I think we were very close to seeing quite ugly scenes. We had a few Wigan fans provoking Saints fans and a couple of Saints fans being escorted off after the match. I saw lots of aggressive behaviour between the sets of fans and I am concerned we are close to a situation with Saints were each game could get quite ugly between the fans.
That to me would be a real shame as I think over the years the derby games have been conducted in an intense but friendly way.'"
I think your right although i can only tell it as i saw it from my seat in the East stand - i was very close to the bunch of Saints fans that were stood up at the back of the East stand.
Before the game started there was some banter but nothing too bad, all that changed once the first try had been scored. A number of Saints fans at the back were pretending to hang themselves and were clearly directing this towards the Wigan fans who were also in the East - to me this was far worse than any of the swearing that has been mentioned. The 'hanging' gestures clearly incensed the Wigan fans that saw it including myself, how this did not turn into a far more serious situation i will not know but i have little doubt that things will get worse before they get better.
There was a couple of Wigan supporters in front of me that were taking pictures of the Saints crowd when this was happening although i have no idea where these pictures will end up.

Dany1979 yes I agree with your version of events. The Wigan fan who got turfed out was equally as provocative though as anything the Saints fans did. My point is that bad behaviour and language by both sets of fans will escalate if not nipped in the bud.

| Just a foot note to my first post... As a parent if I thought someone was going to far with either swearing or aggression .. I WOULD TELL THEM.. and anyone who knows me will tell you .. I have done.. But I'm realistic enough to know you will NEVER erradicate swearing or aggressive banter ... We are going to watch two teams go to battle .. Not a garden party at Buckingham Palace.. Lets get some perspective here .. It's not constant swearing and half the time you can't make out the words. The bigger deal you make of it the worse some will become.. Because some idiots will take matters into their own hands. If you are offended .. Move or if not possible ask them to tone it down..
As for the idiot sts fans pretending to hang themselves.. Was that a disgusting dig at Terry Newton? The same morons who booed his minutes silence

| Quote: tedglen "The use of Foul language at Wigan RL has been around for as long as I've been going to watch them (45 years!)
I agree that such language shouldn't be used where Women and Children are present, and when I took my (then) young kids to Central Park, if I was uncomfortable with what I was hearing around me, then I used to move to another part of the ground.
The problem with the DW, being all-seater and designated seats, that isn't possible.
Perhaps the introduction of a "Family Enclosure block" could be considered as an option next season?
In my opinion, the noise of chanting obsenities from a distance is much more tolerable then that same thing being yelled from within a few feet of your lug-hole.
My 2 cents worth'"
so have racist chants until a few years ago.
but times have changed
theres a warning given out over the speakers before every game...simple....do as it asks...dont use obscene or racist language and it'll be fine

If this is true, whoever took the pictures should post them on here and hopefully other saints fans will name and shame them. Disgusting. Why are we even talking about swearing when saints fans were doing that? Certainly puts it into perspective.

| Wigan pie man .. Swearing isn't aimed at a person because of the colour of their skin.. Racism and swearing are a completely separate issue and should not be compared.

| Why's this issue only just arrived? It happens every game. Why dont people speak up about the Warrington chant? Or the Lockers chant? Or the I want to go home chant?
I could go on, but this is a pathetic thread

| Hmmmm. Unsure how I feel about this:
He's only a poor little scouser...
Referees a Wank..
Build a Bonfire
Wigan Road...F... the Latics
W**ky Warrington
..Cos I'm a Yorks**e Bas****
and on and on it goes.................
I've taken my kids to games since they were babies, they know just because it's sang at rugby doesn't make it OK at home or in the playground.
The only reason the chant on Saturday is getting so much attention is because it was sang so loud by so many and for so long.
Nice if you could all change the word, but c'est la vie.

| The stewards asked for restraint. This was followed by an announcement by the stadium over the tannoy. Those of you who are struggling to understand the issue are clearly the ones who disrespect authority. I don't care how many times bad language has been used previously it doesn't make it right.

I don't disrespect authority.. I do disrespect people who won't allow others their own point of view. Before each game the tannoy requests we don't swear.

| How about for the next Stains game in two weeks:
We don't like you very much,
We don't like you very much,
We don't like you,
We don't like you,
We don't like you very much.

| Quote: MattyB "Whilst it isn't ideal (I have two young lads myself) it's been part of Rugby League since I can remember (early 80's) and they choose to ignore it.
Wire to us (Who the F***ing hell are Wigan/pope song).
Us to Wire (Wanky Wanky Warrington)...still a sexual swear word.
Us to Saints (If you hate St Helens, if you really f***ing hate them).
Us to Leeds (All Yorkshire men sh*g sheep / sheep, sheep sheep sh*ggers).
Us to anyone (Build a bonfire, burn the f***ing lot).
Us to anyone (You'll win win F**k all again, St Helens/Rhinos/Warrington).
Us to any referee (Referee, you're a w*nker, you're a w*nker).
I could go on. It's not a new phenomenon, so why all the hysteria all of a sudden?
A couple of weeks ago, two young lads went past me on bikes (neither older than 7/icon_cool.gif, both effing and jeffing. I spoke to my eldest lad who is ten and I asked him if there is a lot of swearing in the playgrounds, he said there was....and a lot of it came from the girls.
Thank you for been to ashamed to spell out all the explitives. It shows that you to know it is also wrong to use them. You know it would not be printed on this site because they are not acceptable. The tape they play every match asking politely for the crowd not to use Foul racist and abusive language is supported by nearly all the Wigan fans. The few that suggest this is not a family club that does not welcome the children and that you can use bad language to express themselves are in the minority.Just stick to the code of conduct this club is proud to brodcast at every home match
