Conroy - my understanding is that at the end of WW2, Latics were on their way to a match at somewhere exotic like Darwen and had arranged to stop the coach on the way to pick up a brand new kit that they had ordered in their red and white colours.
There was a material shortage at this time and the kit manufacturer had made their new kit in blue and white - the rest is history.
Anyway, back on track re: Wigan's new kit - I'm going to Warriors World shortly and I'll ask if they've got any 'inside information'. I'm sure that in their friendly and customer focused way they'll be able to oblige 
BTW, I've got the retro shirt from the club shop and it's a belter - it's on sale there at the moment for anyone who is interested.
