I'm not a one eyed Wigan fan that thinks the be all and end all of the matter is us being up at the top because i'd quite glady see us sit in mid table if the interntioanl side were ripping it up proving to me the quality around the league was of a very high standard but it simply isn't.
All the clubs have to start getting as many English players in their side as possible.Yes have foreign players in but of the very highest quality and no more then 3 imo.
Rules like that would suit me down to the ground because we have more then enough juniors to see us thrive and the same could be said of Wakey, Cas, Saints, Leeds ect.
It's the lazy clubs that are putting zero into developing their own players that are sha*ging the sport rotten and not putting back in what they take out.
Take Warrington for example and Adrain Morley..........if they could produce their own players like Morley that would be great but they don't and buy them in. They take him off one team and put them in their own so instead of having 2 Adrian Morleys we only have one.
We're as guilty as most for signing players in but nobody could question us actually producing players.'"
Adrian Morley a Warrington product?

But lets be honest the majority of the Aussies are on a bigger pay deal (even if some is offshore) some are great and deserve it. then you have players like piggy'"
What salary is piggy on? And who are you to judge if he deserves what he's paid?

No.
That what i'm saying, they haven't produced a player of anything like that calibre for years and if only they did there would be more quality players to go round instead of the usual suspects having to supply everybodys.
Morley is originally from Salford by the way.

| Quote: Orrell Lad "Even better idea. Let's drag the top clubs down to the level of the dross and see the best players from the top two clubs get royally slapped at a World Cup. No, hang on, that's already happened.'"
Why would Saints, Leeds, Quins, Hull KR, Huddersfield, etc want to be dragged down to Wigan's level?
And this is the problem you have. Wigan have been a mid-table club for a few years now, but yet you seem to equate your lack of success to a decline in the quality of Super League. We are as far away internationally as we have been since the early 1970's, and so there has been no dumbing down. We are where we always have been. It is true that in days gone by Wigan were able to rule the world with stars who learned their trade at somewhere other than Wigan (Goodway, Hanley, Gregory, Hanley, Offiha, Bell, Botica, etc), mixed in with a smattering of local talent (ie, Edwards), but we were no nearer then as we are now.
Wigan need to empty out the trophy cabinet and start afresh, because living in a skewed decade skews judgement.

I don't have to equate Wigan's lack of success to anything, to see that the standards of the domestic and international game in this country are on the slide.
It's not just Wigan. There are plenty Saints fans who will tell you that they aren't as good as they were a few years ago, but are still comfortably top of the pile, remarkably. Leeds probably the same. And then there's Bradford and probably Hull and Wire too. Not a patch on the teams of 4,5,6 years ago.
Cas, Hudds, Quins are occupying higher places in the league than they are accustomed too. In a fairytale world they will tell you that this is because standards are improving in the game and the lesser clubs are "catching up".
Don't for one minute think that these clubs are above Wigan's "level". When they are regularly contesting at least semi-finals, then we'll talk.

| Slugger Mcbatt you seem intent on rubbishing Wigan fans and the clubs success. You keep saying the fans our going in droves? Are they balls!!!
One person said they would turn their back on the sport but the very vast majority have RL in their veins and never would leave including me, how dare you!
Wakefield have won rag all for years and have been crap for years, you have won a few this season that is it. What locally produced players have you produced in the last 10 years appart from Ellis and I mean good players not Jamie Rooney.

We know what we are and our problems. Wigan were once the top club and for ten years they were a ruthless machine. Unfortunately, that has led to a belief that you are still a top club and I just get bored of Wigan fans blaming everything other than what comes out of the dressing room for their lack of success. It's either the salary cap or poor standards, and the view seems to be that other clubs are catching up because everything is worse than it was. But Wigan are not catching up, just other teams.
You need to do what Howard Wilkinson did when he joined Leeds United: the first thing he did was take down all the pictures from the glory years. All we get is "we are RL" and what a great club you are. Concentrate on getting a coach and some players who can play this new sort of dumbed down rugby league and you might win something. But then I expect it will no longer be dumbed down, will it?
Your successful decade was a bizarre period in the game when you acquired some financial money and just bought up all the best players. Take away that decade, and your honours are nothing special.
Wigan is a heartland area and some good quality is produced from it, but some of your fans need to take off your blinkers.

| Slugger, The thread is about the state of SL as a whole, not that Wigan don't win. The original poster stated that all clubs have the same tactics and that is boring. I have followed Wigan for around 25 years and have seen them in division 2. I now live in the midlands but am a season ticket holder and still go to every home game, but I do find SL is far worse than the NRL and I do prefer watching NRL. You only have to see how many English players are in the NRL. 1. Our players are so far behind the Aussies it is untrue. People over here say can't over expose youngsters bring them on slowly, to the point where they are in their early 20's and still not getting regular 1st team games. look at Israel Falous, 19 and played SOO and for the green and golds.
I can't think of a single NRL team that Long, Pryce, Roby, Graham, Burrow, McGuire etc would get anywhere near a starting jersey.

Hmm....I suspect if you'd bothered to check your RL history before posting, you might not have made that comment.
Howard Wilkinson? Leeds? Yep...Just look at them now.
Possibly not the best example you could have used really.

| I think RL is going through a transitional period. Clubs now have pressure on them to bring youth through which takes time to set up service areas and for the players to develop. More juniors are getting games now that would normally. In time when this becomes the norm and they get older and the throughput increases we will see more and better GB players.
The other thing is clubs are all fully professional now and therefore will be a lot fitter. In the days of the Leeds/Wigan dominant period these clubs had the majority of the better players and played against part timers which naturally created in balanced games. Great if you like seeing big scores and what appears to look like great rugby. Now all teams are as fit as each other and can defend for long periods.
We look on the past as great days. Crowds at Wilderspool were 3-4000 and equally as low at other clubs.
The game is moving in the right direction it will just take time.
The days of a player scoring 10 tries in a game have long gone thank God. Now most games finish with a 10 points difference which is exciting.

| The main thing is, the GB team is no different than it was 6 years ago, bar a few retirements.
Still the likes of Wellens, Senior, Gleeson, Peacock etc etc.
With these old players still in the team it just shows how deep the lack of talent is. Newer GB 'stars' such as Graham, Burrow, McGuire etc have failed to perform.
7/8 years ago we could give the Aussies one hell of a game, even though they were always favourites - it was never a walkover. These days we're lucky if they don't put 50 past us every time.
There is no quality in depth. I think in 5 years time or longer, we shall get some skill back into the game as there seems to be a lot of young talent on the brink of 1st team rugby in SL. The ideas of clubs now seems to be blood the youngsters. Soon we'll have at least 13 players in each 17 from England - which may give us more GB variation. But at the moment, the rugby is boring.
