| I seem like a rugby player who didn't quite make it? Don't be so quick to put people down, and don't make rash judgements with aim to offend.
And it further disgusts that you think and compared playing for Wigan as the same as any other job.
Some of us still have respect, grew up loving the club and still do, being part of this great team with so much history and feeling is more than just a job.
I just hope to god the players in our team have a better attitude and approach that you.

Anyone got his stats?'"
Giants wont loan him out, finningan and raleigh are out for a while so they wont weaken the pack even more, hes back in the 1st team now.

| Quote: Cruncher "Except that it isn't as simple as that.
Many top athletes abstain from alcohol entirely during the performing season, quite a few RL players among them. Ellery Hanley was a very good example.
Now I wouldn't go as far as to impose a drink ban on these lads. But as a way to maintain your fitness, it's far from being a fanciful ideal.
And though I've heard it said many times, it doesn't stack up to compare athletes whose vocation demands extreme levels of physical excellence with plumbers, policemen etc, who work at a far more sedate and physically less demanding pace. It simply doesn't, and I don't understand why people insist on making this daft comparison.
When you think about it, to go on the wagon during the RL season is not even that much of a sacrifice, given the potential rewards. Professional sportsmen have very short careers. If they want to be the best, they can leave the booze until they've retired - at the ripe old age of 30 in many cases, so it's not as if they'll miss out completely on the party animal lifestyle.
But as I said, it's down to the individual players. It's about how much they're prepared to give up to be the best at what they do. And if they're not prepared to go that extra dry mile, fair enough. Maybe it'll make no difference to their career, maybe it will. They'll never know.'"
Although I agree with your point regarding players and alcohol - even the best need a little time to relax. Yes, they're representing Wigan RL at all times, even when out on the lash and thus should act accordingly, which you'll find the vast majority do so and do themselves no harm. Only a minority make a show of themselves and put the club in a poor light.
I'm not saying they should all go out on the lash and encourage a 'party animal lifestyle' among the team - but surely they should be allowed to enjoy themselves, within good reason?

To be honest, these are two slightly different points.
The health risk from heavy drinking is not quantifiable by someone like me - I have only basic medical training. But I'm sure it will hamper performance at some stage. As I say, many athletes abstain entirely, presumably on the advice of experts, which means that others are ignoring such advice. But that's up to them. They will be the main sufferers.
The embarrassment risk is not the same. I agree that only a handful cause problems for the image of their club when they go out partying. But unfortunately, it only takes a handful - in fact it only takes one - to make the headlines. I certainly wouldn't stop players relaxing and socialising, but going down King Street is surely a no-no. There are all kinds of idiots down there just looking to cause trouble for 'famous people' (and maybe to make a bob on the side). Enough rugby and football players have found this out by now. Personally, I'd advise them to find a more sedate environment - some posh hotel or nightclub somewhere, where there are less temptations to cut loose.
But, at the end of the day, these decisions must be made by the players themselves. I don't believe in bans or prohibitions for adults. But one thing I do have a problem with is this crass notion, which seems to be regularly aired on this board, that "they're just a bunch of young lads letting off steam, and they should be allowed to do exactly what they want" - and presumably to hell with the consequences.
Fun doesn't come before responsibility for anyone, but especially not for those who are set up as role-models.
