You might want to rethink that one mate. He has two challenge cups as head coach (Sheffield '98 and Hull FC '05) and one more as assistant (Wigan '02). He's gone downhill alot in the last half-decade but if my team was the underdog in a cup final there's no one I'd want in the dressing room more than John Kear.

Fair enough, although I did mean at Wakefield.
Do you really think he can take Wakey to the Cup final???

No, I don't think Wayne Bennett could take Wakey to the final, so talking about Wakey's lack of trophies under Kear is redundant.

| I rate Maguire more than Smith because Maguire uses his head and thinks of new techniques whereas Smith is a quality coach but copies techniques rather than invent .

Alright Grimmy, chill out man. You're the one who started talking about him being a coach at a cup final!
Say what you like about Kear's past record, and he may be a good motivator in a cup final situation, but the fact is that SL has moved on and Kear hasn't! OK, he's not had a stable financial situation at Wakey, but give him the best players in SL, and I still feel that he couldn't take them to the top of the league, because his coaching is out of date, and he's refused to embrace the way the game is played these days.

I'd agree with this, Maguire definatley invented the chicken wing and the calf cruncher, if he keeps coming up with these techniques we'll be asking what his special recipe is!

Dont tell Solomona about chicken wings and calf crunchers otherwise he'll think KFC have come up with a new meal deal.

| 1. Smith - incredibly difficult to separate the first two, but more trophies as HC over a longer period and with different teams just swings it.
2. Maguire - only beaten because the body of work as HC is less than a season and a half, albeit a great 18 months.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
big gap
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Brown - taking Huddersfield in the right direction, year on year.
4. Potter - excellent record at Catalans, maintained the status quo at Saints where the decline was already setting in and slowly turning round a poor Bradford side.
5. Morgan - recruits well, has a team that can beat anyone on their day, but lacks consistency.
6. Matterson - making great progress with Cas and improving constantly.
7. McDermott - overrated and not good enough to step into McClennan's shoes at Leeds.
8. Simmons - difficult to judge so far - couple of good performances and a couple of shockers.
9. Robinson - as above.
10. Powell - as above.
11. Harris - no huge drop off from Noble, but still relatively unproven.
12. Kear - bitter has been, now known more for sad rants than coaching skills.
13. McRae - has been, but less likely to motivate his team in a one-off game than previous.
14. Agar - finds a way to make a mediocre team out of an excellent squad. Clueless buffoon.

Definately. Kear, while being a grade A t0ss p0t would be the first coach I would look to employ if I was a CEO of a lower table side. Yes he does not have the tactical ability to coach a team at the top of the table and at a top level IMO, but he has proven time and time again, he is second to none for triumphing over adversity and getting far, far more out of average or below average players, especially in one off occasions such as cup finals etc. Kear while tactically deficient, is a fantastic man motivator and possibly the best in the business in this area.
On the subject of coaches Agar and McRea are by far the worst IMO. Agar possibly edges it - Look at that Hull side on paper and they are a top 4 team. Swap Agar with McGuire at Wigan and Hull and we would go back to our Noble level at 5th/6th in the league and hull would be challenging for honours.

spot on..... the wrestling techniques Wigan are now famous for have been invented by Maguire, and absolutely have not been copied from his former boss Craig Bellamy
oh aye and this rings a bell from 2008 a quote by John Cartwright of the Titans when having a pop at Maguires Boss Again....
Cartwright said, Melbourne players had been attacking ankle, knees and the Achilles tendon of ball carriers in a bid to slow the play-the-ball.
what next for the Magical Maguire maybe he'll sign a ruck load of Storm players........oh ...hang on....
all his own ideas ..get real........

| I dont mean anything nast but I think McCrae being ill is probably the best thing for Super League. I hate it when he is a pundit and for me the only bad thing about GF day is having him putting his two pence worth. And from an outsider looking in Salford seem better off without him.
But Kear I have worked with him in his back room a few year back. I know he is an excellent motivator, I personally think tactic wise he is good. My knowledge of the game has increased ten fold after bbeing there. But with his comments of Wigan well he has gone down in my book but not as much it would have done if it was another coach.
Agar IS THE WORST COACH IN SUPER LEAGUE. My 6 month old could do more with that squad than what he has done.
1. Madge
2. Tony Smith
GAP
3. Nathan Brown
AN EVEN BIGGER GAP
Justin MOrgan- could be higher with consistancy
Terry MAtterson- Cas improving year on year
These two are on par
A GAP
Royce Simmons
Mcdermott
Potter
Harris and Powell both are young coaches and still finding their feet so I would/am expecting them to improve and have good coaching careers especially Harris.
If McNamara was coaching SL he would be here. In my opinion after listening to him he got the job as he could be a very good business man and some food ideas and initiatives. However I think his coaching based on the quality of rugby his team produces and results is crap.
McCrae and Agar bottom of the pile.
I haven't put Kear in there as I can't put him to low as it feels wrong to me but I cant put him to high as I feel it is rose tinted specs is the reason why I put him there.
