| stand off or scrum half.
Andy Gregory with Edwards a very close second. Gregory had skill that cant be coached. Ray French used to call him the little General and thats exactly what he was. When he was on the field, he demanded players run where he wanted them and he would think nothing of running into the biggest forward on the field and then giving them a crack.
Edwards was more of a master tactician and born winner. He was like having a second coach on the pitch according to Monie.

| Gregory had everything, cocky, confident, strong quick line breaker, great passing and kicking game and a nasty little sod to boot absolutely loved him.
He was perfectly complemented by the guy outside him who in my opinion became a better player after Greg finished when he took on the bulk of the sides creativity. Best British club half back pair I have ever seen.

| From who I have watched from 2000 onwards - Adrian Lam & Trent Barrett.

| Gregory & Edwards = no argument.
Nigel Wright could have been in the same category if it hadn't been for injury.Trent Barrett was probably the best since.

| Andy Gregory, closely followed by Sean Edwards. Gregory had all the class in the world. Edwards was so determined, professional and clinical . Which I am sure he will bring to us, when he comes back to Wigan.
Gregory had natural talent. Edwards had to work at it, and succeeded.
My old Dad said they were the best half back pairing at Wigan he had ever seen, since Ces Mountford and Tommy Bradshaw. But surpassed them. My old dad went back to the 1920's for his comparisons.

| Botica was certainly the best ever kicker I saw IMHO. My dad said the best since the great Jim Sullivan.

| I would always chose Edwards before Gregory, as he had the better overall game, certainly kicking and defensively. Both great players but Greg could drift off into his own world at times and lose concentration.

| Only been watching since 2001, but does Sam Tomkins not enter the conversation from when he played there in 2009 and half of 2010? Teams just couldn't deal with him at all, heavily contributing to us ending Leeds 3 year SL winning run and our own 12 year SL trophy drought. Lam and Barrett were very good, but I don't think they dominated games for us as much as Tomkins did.
I can't comment on Edwards and Gregory as I've only seen highlights. It was a different game then from the looks of it as well, they seemed to think nothing of passing it 10 metres back by design, and defenses seemed a lot more scattered with a very quick ptb.

| Edwards - fantastic HB and would have him over Gregory given he was the best finisher in the game - bar none.
Barrett and Lam not a patch on Edwards and Gregory, I'd rate Tomkins above both of these imports, unplayable in his pomp and even now, a general on the pitch, we are really going to miss him next year

| Greg
Edwards
Barrett (was outstanding in a poor Wigan team. Carried us on his own at times, I seem to recall a game v Hull when he particularly dominated. Unlike Greg and Shaun who played in star-studded sides)
Mention to Phil Blake. Spent must of time with us as a FB but was an outstanding 6. Was an NRL star.

| Gregory.
If Greg had Edwards commitment, professionalism and work ethic, he would have been the best player in the world.

| Quote: Pemps "Gregory.
If Greg had Edwards commitment, professionalism and work ethic, he would have been the best player in the world.'"
Held a sportsmans dinner 2 weeks ago with Brian noble as guest speaker.
We invited Andy Gregory along as believe it or not he played cricket for spring view when he was younger so he always helps us out where and when he can.
With his recent Hall of fame inclusion we decided we'd take the opportunity and I had the honour of Interviewing him.
He was his usual self and gave loads of compliments to players he's played with (lots of praise for Tony myler which I agree with as Brian noble said him and Greg were the best HB pairing he's come across).
I said a couple of words
My personal comment was that when my kids ask who's the best player you've ever seen its very subjective in lots of ways and there's lots of ways you could.look at that question. Ellery, Kenny, Edwards etc (of go Hanley if pushed).
But if you asked me if I could watch 1 player play 1 game again who would it be i'd pick Greg. When he was on it he was magical.
I also took a quote from an Aussie who when asked who was the best British player he'd come up against and said :-
"A certain little halfback! That little ! I admired Andy Gregory as much, if not more, than any other player because of the creativity that he boasted and the determination to cause defeat for Australia. He was also one of the toughest players that I ever played against."
That was from Wally Lewis!
Who am I to argue with that!

I think the original quote was rather more forthright than that from Wally Lewis, but the same sentiment.
