Wigan Warriors have today named the 19-man squad for Friday’s Super 8s Derby with St Helens.
Wigan make two changes from last week with both Tom Davies and Joel Tomkins replaced by Nick Gregson and Jack Wells.
John Bateman is included and is set to make his 100th appearance for the Warriors this week.
With the two sides level on 27 points, just one off Wakefield in fourth place, the meeting could be a crucial one at the race for Old Trafford begins to hot up.
The honours are even between the pair this season with Wigan having won the Good Friday Derby 29-18 and St Helens taking the second Super League meeting 22-19.

| I'm surprised Joel Tomkins is missing from the squad after being passed fit for last week. Thought he'd have been sure of a game this week. Same as Wembley line up then.

| Shame Joel misses out as I'd have put him in for FPN but there's enough talent to do the job.
If we compound our non existent long kicking game with errors and penalties again we'll struggle but keep those to a minimum and even without that long kicking game we should go close.

| Would you risk Marshall after his mare at the weekend? The young lad looked mentally shot to bits. Throwing him into an away Saints derby with our season on the line doesn't exactly sound like a great way to help him get his confidence back. If he has another poor game it could really ruin him. Smith would be sure to put every kick his way, and the hostile Saints crowd would be on his back.
I'd be tempted to shift Gelling to the wing and Bateman to centre. Not ideal, but would at least ensure we are defensively sound on that side, even if the attack would need to be focused on the left (which is full of talent anyway with Williams, Farrell, Gildart and Burgess). Take Marshall out of the firing line, let him run riot in the reserves, then bring him back against easier opposition in a less important game.

| I think it worked fine with Gelling switching on kicks. As long as Marshall doesn't dick around trying to block players off again.

| To take him out now could finish the lad off. Manage him well and he'll go ok. Show him all the good he's done all season instead of focusing on his worst game in the first team. Somewhere between his performances at Warrington away and Wembley will be solid enough. Wembley could be the making of him but a repeat could mentally break him. He'll need no motivation this week!!

Totally agree.
If you put a winger in for him that's one thing, but putting Gelling onto the wing would be a real kick for Marshall.
Plus Gelling has put his monthly effort in now. That's him done until October. Back to brain farts in attack and flying out his line in defence.
Marshall will do just fine. He won't be being told 20 minutes before KO that he's in, this week, either.

| I wonder if we'll see Gregson? He did well last season when called upon, has he played at all yet this year?

I recall him being robbed of a try away at Leeds (Not getting many of those calls) and he played at Swinton in the cup. He played a few other games as well but he looked short of his best.

Fully agree.
The kid needs an arm around him and to be pumped full of belief this week. Even amongst a few mistakes on Saturday he was a constant threat and he could be a match winner for us on Friday.
Fingers crossed for him because he's a talent and he plays with a lot of passion. I hope everyone gets right behind him.

I remember a young Gary Connolly having a torrid time at Wembley, far worse than what Marshall had to cope with.
He turned out ok.

| I agree too. Everyone was slagging Marshall off at the game, but when I got home and watched it back on TV, he was certainly no more culpable than other, more experienced players (Faz, Burgess?) who made critical unforced errors, and in fact didn't let his head drop and did plenty of good things.

He was really blubbing after the game and I really felt for the lad.
I really hope he has a stormer tonight
