| Well that's confirmation of Goulding in the centres then, I must admit I do fear this defensively, but I'll keep that opinion tucked away and give them a chance, they deserve it!
Glad to see Mossop and Preccy rewarded for their hard work!

| Great to see Prekky and Mossop with first team numbers. Well deserved.
Joe Mellor will be a breakout player, the last few to wear 25 have all done pretty well...

| 9 of the first 13, and 11 of first 17 are all Wigan produced lads, including an entire Wigan made pack 8-13.

I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I am all out of bubblegum.

| I doubt we'll be fielding the team in numerical order, or at least I hope not.
Great depth in the Forwards, we've got some real scope to rotate them around, and in the process keep them all fresh and fit.
My only concern, like I'd imagine everyone else's, is centre. Hopefully one of the trio coming in will give us some depth in that position.
Quote: Ian Lenegan "there are three spaces in the squad to be filled and we hope to reveal the young players to fill these positions in due course'"
I'm presuming Dudson and Flower. But the third? He's another young player at least, if Lenegan's comments are anything to go off.

| Number 25 has been extremely lucky for the last two players, hope it works out that way for Joe this season

Why not? That's pretty much the side everyone would pick at the minute (I'd have thought), some may throw Mellor in there, Id consider it, but that first 17 is pretty accurate for me at the minute.

This mythical Super League centre we've signed maybe?

Well I'm personally not particularly enthralled by Goulding at three and Tommy at 7. But I'd agree that's probably how we'll start the season.
I also wouldn't start Mossop and Prescott together. But now I'm just nitpicking. God knows we could do with some depth there. Touch wood Carmont can make it through the season without injury.

I don't rate Goulding, if he comes up good this season, great, but I'm not holding out much hope. I also don't rate Marsh that highly, however I think he's got more of a creative spark and more potential than Goulding, so I'd hope he'll get some game time.
I think we may have to just get used to not having the luxury of the squad depth we've been used to, we have/had a young side anyway with a lot of youngsters coming through on low contracts at once (Tomkins x 2, Farrell, Mossop, Charnley, Tuson, Goulding) who will all need upgrades. Squad depth in the last few years has come from those youngsters breaking through, that's why we've had it in the forwards, now we need some centres to turn good.

[quote="headhunter":lnxdgxk2]Union people are idiots. They almost universally accept that league is a better, faster game played by better athletes, yet for some reason they continue to disregard and belittle it. That game is tedious as hell from start to finish. If he'd ever played or even bothered to give more than a fleeting chance to league he would realise that the game is far more 'technical' than Union ever could be. Booting the ball into touch, scrummaging and forming rucks and mauls aren't areas that involve any skill, technique or mental capacity whatsoever. These are clumsy, outdated facets of the game that are also extremely uninteresting to watch and thus have to be defended in some way by people who are too prejudiced to see the truth.[/quote:lnxdgxk2]: |

| Must say looking at that...for the first time in 2 years I think we look fairly weak and Im a little worried! Last year we had class players outside the 17 and good competition for places, this year we've lost hoffman, coley, joel & deacon and have little significant quality to replace them.
Unless either we get some decent signings in, or the young lads currently in the 20s step up massively this year a'la saints last year, I think we will lose some serious ground on wire.
Last seaon Wigan and Wire were one or two divisions up from the rest of the league for the majority of the season but I see us dropping back into a league with saints, leeds, and huds fighting for a distant second unfortunately.....yes we may do a Leeds and get lucky at the end of the season but cant see us being anywhere near wire at the top next year who will walk the league by about 6-8 points IMO! We will lose games down the right hand side i fear which could become turnstylesque next year!
Frankly we need a top class centre but leneghan has obviously decided to not get his hand in his pocket judging by his comments and I think that, with massive losses in the pack, will see us lose a massive competitve edge next season.
Also McIllurum as seemingly the only first team hooker in the squad if it appears tommy is back to 7 is not far from suicide IMO. McIllurum simply isnt good enough to control a game as 1st choice hooker - interchange yes- starting hooker is a big no no!
I fear the season could rest on whether Mellor or Tomkins junior are good enough to make a massive step up to being first team regulars, giving us options in the middle, and Roberts miraculously returning to start of the season 2010 form and plugging the right wing with Charnley centre.
Interesting times but I fear we've lost too much all at once again - it will certainly be a year of transition!
Going of that id say we're a decent outside bet to retain the challenge cup but we've suddenly gone from being odds on to win everything to being one of 4/5 decent teams at the top with a reasonable chance!
