He looked quite happy at the end - I think for a split second we were going to get the fingers but he changed his mind and just booted the ball. The Cas fan next to me was going mental - I thought they had won the grand final.

I agree - Awful.
Kick the ball to him and you can pretty much guarantee a mistake every 3 to 4 kicks (at his best).
The try he scored was, shall we say, Karl Pryce-esque - Catch and fall.

Individually, he is. He's been fortunate to play in some very good teams.
If you were honest, and made a list of the Full Backs in SL at the moment ranked on ability, he's not getting above halfway. Tomkins, Hodgson, Webb, Grix, Greenshields, Kearney, Briscoe et al are all better.
Never stops trying though, bless him.

Mathers seemed like a popular lad when he was at the club - folk who knew him all seemed to like him, but I can't see past that play-off semi at Leeds, when he allowed one up-and-under to bounce after another. Only a miracle prevented them storming in for several more scores as a result of such ineptitude.
He's never a fullback in the memory of man. |

He's actually been really good for us in most games so far but handling kicks - not so much the bombs but 50/50 grubbers etc - has been his big weakness. Believe me he's a massive improvement on McGoldrick at FB. |

Yes but you see, Wigan fans only judge Mathers on the time he played for them and the games he plays in against them. He could be super-awesome for the other 26+ games of the season and he'd still be awful despite Wire fans praising him and Cas fans praising him.
Yesterday was probably his worst game for us but he wasn't the only one who struggled with the conditions.
You could probably forgive him for the first try because Wigan got jammy with the deflection off our play and Finch was already steaming on to the ball and so the bounce favoured him before Mathers had time to adjust.
The second mistake, fair enough, but then again so did several other players (Pat Richards, anyone?). |
