| ...how Warrington supporters are trying to argue that Mathers is better than Gleeson! He's had 2 average games and a shaky one for Wire and they think he's Gods gift from heaven.

But it's difficult to deny that he's already played better for them than he did for us. And he wouldn't be the first average player who's done that.
Kevin Brown was another.
It makes me think even less of him, to be honest.

Bit harsh that mate , I would look into our coaching staff first , they have a habit of not bringing the best out of players.

oh look, another Wigan thread trying to justify Gleeson Mathers deal. Why cant you just be happy with the fact you think you got rid of a poor player as we all are happy we got rid of someone whos heart wasnt in it playing for our team. Not all Wiganers are like this and some sensible posts have been made but the amount of Wiganers trying to prove Mathers is gash is just cringeworthy.
Let it go!

Couldn't have anything to do with the constant criticism/pressure etc that Wigan players (Or should I have said "Whomever the Scapegoat at that present time is"icon_wink.gif get from certain sections of the Wigan public.
There is No other club/fans that put the amount of pressure and criticism on individuals so quickly and their only Tactical solution to a Wigan defeat is "Player "A" or "B" is crap get rid and they don't get off his back until he's gone!
Player AorB disappears and you know what? Same old problems are there!
TBH it's not so much the criticism of certain aspects of the players game that irritates as much as the Personal Insults against players that NONE of us would be within a Million miles of ever being as good as that Narks!
5 mins into this season and Wakey kicked a ball into touch 10 mtrs from West Stand and as the ball was rolling towards the sidelines the same old Numpties near me start off with the :- "Pick it up Mathers you useless Blah Blah Blah"!
Anything that was remotely in his vacinity was immediately thrown at him as his Fault!
My mate turned and said he may as well go now as Nothing he ever did would make these lot Happy until they Hound him out of the club!
The same can now be said for Riddell/Pryce/Roberts/Fielden/Bailey and has previously applied to Richards/Coley.
The same fans that Called Richards not fit to burn now hold him up as "SuperPat"!

| A player has 1 or 2 bad games for us people are on here criticising them. Shouting on them.
Then again the same can be said for Wire fans. They have the same problem as us. Both clubs think they are bigger than they really are at this moment in time. The league table never lies and both sides are very poor.

Mathers is a nice lad, and I hope it works out for him. I agree, there are some pillocks in the Wigan training set-up who shouldn't be anywhere near a club like our.
But I've seen many players in the past leave Wigan after being, frankly, awful, and then go elsewhere and immediately show the sort of form that would have guaranteed them another contract with us - and this rankles.
Mathers isn't showing that sort of form yet, plus he doesn't have the attitude issues that players like Brown, Hodgson, Robinson etc had, so maybe you're right. Maybe I am being overly judgemental.

My Old Fella used to say "It Takes A Big Player to Fill a Wigan Shirt!".
It's the same when footballers sign for UTD or Liverpool etc, they may be good enough to play for other clubs but their whole demenour changes when they get to clubs like UTD/Liverpool/Arsenal in Football and Wigan in Rugby Legaue.
It's obviously much easier to do it when the teams doing well but if they aren't it takes a strong Character as well as playing ability to achieve it.
WIgan fans should take this on board when players come to Wigan it isn't like going to Hudds/Wakey/Salford and many many more clubs. There are very few places in the world where the microscope is on you like at Wigan and us Wigan Fans don't help that sometimes!

So how does that explain your failed Aussies who play in front of big crowds every week and feature in the papers like footballers over here.
You get 15000 per game which is less than Leeds and not much more than plenty of other clubs- equally you have a town football team that has a greater profile these days.

| I've been pleasantly suprised by how good Mathers has been to be fair.
I thought he was a carthorse who couldnt run or pass but barring that one error yesterday he's been very very good/solid.
Was I gutted when Gleese left? yes
Are we weaker since he left? most definately
Have we got the worst of this deal?
..hard to say but with imo a replacement for the future in Bridge and 100k plus a decent full back you've got to say we're going to get more life out of the deal than the 3 or so years Wigan will get from Gleese imo

| TBH!!
We have Gleeson
They have Mathers
Do I give a f**k how Mathers performs there? NO! Wish him all the best, I really liked him, shame we had to get rid, I'm sure Wire fans know as we did, he'd never be the player he was after coming back from such a bad injury.
But he's done fantastic to come back from it.
We'll see Gleeson come alive once he's bonded with the players around him. Yes we attack down the left alot, beacuse the players in that area have all played together for a few seasons. Pat, Carmont, and Hock, our right wing is more or less, brand new, with Bailey/J. Tomkins, Gleeson and Roberts.
Lets have topics like this come the end of the season, see were we are then

| These threads are boring. They are two completely different players in different positions, just because they were exchanged in the same deal, why do they need to be compared?
Mathers would probably have been released by Wigan anyway, it just wasn;t working there for him. At Wire I have been impressed. He is much more of an all rounder than I expected, with more of a ball playing role. Hopefully under Smith he will go well.
At right Centre we have not struggled, as Bridge now has the position and that is working well too.
Wigan have signed a very good player in Gleeson, and when they start to get quality ball to him, he will do well.
Surely we are all happy with the deal?
