I think you probably heard in the news about the Icelandic Bank Crash resulting in Christies losing 6.9million, the compensation scheme has failed to pay out that amount and the MEN has launched an online government petition to try to make the government to act.

Its crazy to think that the goverment gave the banking industry billions of pounds and christies has lost 6.9M and they will not see a pound back.

Just before get things out of hand, let me clear a few things up.

Christies is a charity, which raises money for the work done at The Christie (the Hospital).

It is the charity that has lost this money, which was earmarked to go towards our first two Radiotherapy satellite centres in Oldham and Salford.

It's not the stock market, their money was held by Kaupthing which is an investment bank that collapsed in October. They will probably get some, if not all of their money back. Depends on how quickly the administrators can recover it and who they decide to reimburse first.

My Nan has been treated there and they treated her incredibly well. Hopefully the government will act in the best way!

Has anyone else seen that Whelan has bought the gym side of the JJB empire back, and he thanks local MP Neil Turner for helping to "fast track" the early release of his £40million assets from the Icelandic bank Kaupthing? How is it he can get £40 million fast tracked but charities such as Christies have to wait? I know he says that the fast tracking helped him to keep JJB going and keep jobs but it still seems a bit unfair.
The story is on the Wigan Today website by the way.

ridiculous that banks get bailed out but not essential public services

agree, hospitals in control of their money, aming it like a business with a spreadsheet completely misses the point of providing a service. shouldnt have been this far

This country disgust me. The banks get billions thrown at them and they then laugh in the publics face by awarding themselves bonuses and pensions for catastrophic failure. Yet a very vital charity is going to lose what is a drop in the ocean to what the government has been handing out.

I am not sure whether they will get it all back, I am a director of a local charity and I had asked for guidance from the charity commission the other week about assets as I was informed that we would only recover 50k, I was contemplating opening other accounts to place monies elsewhere.

I think what I read in the initial press release from MEN was that they wasn't going to get it back.

I will see if I can find the link again
