Some basic catching practice needed, I reckon. How many 'certain tries' blown in the last two games? Three ... maybe they weren't all certainties, but they were very good opportunities wasted.

Also, what about these offloads? Some suicidal attempts last night, which let Hudds off the hook at least twice when they were under pressure. I'm sure I read somewhere that this was a new strategy Wigan would be officially employing this season. If so, I recommend they revise this strategy forthwith.

Scrap the offloading game for sure. Either you commit to it totally or you don't bother at all IMO. We're currently playing half structured mixed with half an offloading game and we look disjointed.

Why fix what's not broke.

Agreed. I think Wane is pushing the offloading game since we saw lots of it from the Kiwis in the 4 Nations. We should go back to what worked so well previously.

It's early days yet, I'd like to see how we look when we are a bit less rusty. At times last season it looked to me like some teams really had our number in attack.

It's a strange one. Wane gets criticised for having no plan B, then gets criticised when he tries something a bit different. icon_biggrin.gif What I would like to see is the likes of Tautai driving in and offloading but then we need an Edwards type player (Bowen or Hampshire etc) supporting close to him rather than just playing out wide

The off-loading game is fine...at the right time. The Hudds game there were too many offloads in our own half (Gelling esp) which is not the place to try it. Mixing up the style is a good option - it is just getting the players to be more selective in when they try things.

I have to say I disagree with those saying scrap the offloading after just 2 games as it 'doesn't work'. It clearly does and is very successful for many other teams. The only question is can we do it effectively and that can't be answered so early in the piece. It would be like saying 'stop passing to our wingers as they obviously can't catch the ball'. If it still isn't working for us once we have a settled team etc. then by all means call for it to be ditched. I doubt that will be the case though. I suspect it will find it's place in the armoury and, as Grimmy and Rogues pointed out, may go some way to addressing the need for a plan B. We have a couple good offloaders in this team and we should seek to utilise their strengths. I would like to think that, further down the track, it will settle round those good at the skill rather than the whole team looking to offload as seems the case at the moment.

I just don't see us making a style of play work were we try and play structured and an off the cuff offloading game at the same time.

We either alter our style totally and start offloading and playing off the cuff rugby or we knock it on the head. It would be bad news for a halfback like Matty Smith if we went down the offload route. He's thrived at Wigan playing in our system and isn't suited to an off the cuff style of game.

I just want to see us go back to the Maguire days of controlled aggression mixed with a low risk style of play.

It was simple and effective for Maguire. You hurt them in defence and then built up pressure which eventually turned into points.

On top of that Maguire kept things in house instead of looking for soundbites and also only played young lads when they were good enough and not for the sake of it!

Agree with that.

I really do think that as good as Smith has been under Wane he would have been even better under Madge. Smith has been asked to take on more than he's probably comfortable with under Wane. Whilst he's done extremely well he would have shone under Madge just like Deacon did.

I think people are jumping to conclusions about the offloading.
3 from gelling and 2 from joel - 3 from the rest of team.

gelling and offloads is a problem that will never be solved. same for joel.

dont judge waney off them two

Gelling needs to be told to revert back to last years style of play.

I think he is getting a little over confident after a prolonged period in the 1st team. I rate Gelling and see him as our 2nd best centre behind Sarginson when he plays safe rugby. All Gelling needs to do to impress is continue with his relentless carries and metre making whilst only passing the ball when an overlap has been created. Flick passes and dangerous offloads are fine when in the opposition 20 but nowhere else. Him doing that, Sarg on the other side being more fancy and our set plays is more than enough of an attacking threat.

I like the idea of adding more offloads to our game but they need to be at the correct time, and worth the risk. If its an obvious offload that is fair enough but other than that it should be in the opposition half. At times in these first two games we have been forcing an offload with 3/4 defenders around the ball carrier, and also when we haven't had much of the ball or territory for a reasonable period. O'Loughlin and Gelling being the main culprits IMO.

If Miles and Offiah where the centre/winger partnership on Friday Wigan would have knocked at least 40 points on Friday. a046.gif

If last Friday had been Gene Miles or Martin Offiah's second game at the club they'd have been lucky to score four points never mind forty.
In their first few game both were distinctly mediocre.
We all know how good they became but let's not kid ourselves they both had blinders from match one or two because they didn't.
