| We are about half way now and just wondered what everyone's thoughts were so far?
Plenty of subjects to mull over but i will start with the obvious one. The name that can not be named. With the recruitment staff in Oz and the probable new prop what are we doing with this person. I can understand the club not saying anything but they must realise that the general public are not stupid. We need an announcement.
Recruitment :- Sam T obviously we know about but i don't think any of us though that he would be such a mature more accomplished all rounder as he has shown so far. Brilliant to see and the new captain without a doubt. Isa has looked ok for me, he has looked good in games but pretty ordinary in general.
Halves :- The start of the season was awash with Hampshire (myself included) to be given a chance but judging by his mediocre performances for Cas i would say on that subject it is 'Wane 1-0 Fans' Williams has been out for a while but i haven't seen anything different from last year, that isn't a criticism btw it's just an observation. Smith, i don't think he is good enough for Wigan however i did say that when we had a fully fit Sam and Williams we would see a more relaxed and different player and i think at the moment he is proving very satisfactory (minus his goal kicking which is bloody awful) We need a strong 6 or 7 to compliment Williams and this needs to be done next season.
Props :- Still lightweight although there has been a major improvement on last season, The aggression Sutton and Clubb bring let's the others off the hook a little but we need more umph, we need a battering ram like Hill, Walmsley, Amor, Sims, Prichard. We need a stand out prop.
Wingers - Manfredi has carried on from where he left off and Charnley is (frustratingly) having one of his best seasons for us in his last. We all know we need a big signing here, Solomona maybe.
Centres - Gelling is just Gelling, you can't coach that. Sarginson has been pretty good in general i would say although i still don't rate him. Gildart has tonnes of potential but tonnes of errors too, lot of learning to be done there.
Discipline - Has been poor, very poor, Lockers, Joel, Teatowel and Faz the main culprits. Silly tackles and general dirty play. Needs cleaning up, Other fans call us dirty because of the 3 man in the tackle stuff but but that isn't an issue. The issue is the sliding in with the knees, holding down and reefing the ball in a 2 man tackle too much. It needs to stop.
Coach - Appreciate what he has done for us but the rugby this season has been appaling before Sam's return and some of the comments he has made in important situations have been baffling.
Overall - Happy to be second, lot's of work still to be done but the main issue for me on the field this season is the lack of discipline we have shown. We have the player to win something this season but i fear the ill-discipline will make us fall short again.

Wigan rugby league, hated, adored but never ignored
Terry Newton - 07.11.78 - 26.09.10 - R.I.P.: |

| Fabulous post, wouldn't disagree with much there.
I tend to think that Wigan have learnt from the last few seasons that there's no need to win each game then fall short at the business end of the season. There's not been a full 80 minute performance yet and I'm hoping the best is yet to come.
Obviously the injuries have had a massive impact and we have survived this pretty well. My main issue is the number of silly errors and lack of discipline.
I do have confidence in this team and Shaun Wane, think we can achieve if everyone plays to their ability.
Isa has been better than expected and Sam has really impressed me after such a long time out, so glad to have him back.
Gildart not as good as last year, would do him good to have a couple of games out maybe. I really miss Watching Micky Mac, hope to see him back before the end of the season. Ben Flower going well.
A couple of the more experienced players not performing, need to put more effort in - Joel & Moose.
Bateman has been awesome for me again this year, hope the issue surrounding him can be resolved & he can retain his place in the squad however if the club decides that he has to go then I will respect their decision but would be very sorry to see him go.
But who's tea towel ?

| Disappointed. There is no "stand-out" side this year, and the only saving grace is that whilst we have gone backwards, we havent fallen off the cliff like Leeds & Huddersfield have.
My main concern is that whilst we are very good at snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, they are against sides that have been beating by 15-20 points in previous seasons, and when we face the sides who are in the top 4, and most likely in the semis for the GF, we are not going to be in a position to grind out a win, because they are going to be 15-20 points up on us.
Catalan away will be a big marker as to how good we actually are.
I think there'll be a new name on the SL trophy this season.

| The biggest disappointment has been the lack lustre attack, the disruptions of no settled playmakers has not helped. I agree that discipline is an issue Farrell, O,Louglin, Tomkins, Tuatai need to give less pens in the tackle. Discipline missing when we are in front and need to close out games, too many games being closer than they should have been
Positives, we have won close games away which we have lost in recent seasons. Charnley back to something like his best, Tomkins having a positive effect sooner than I expected following his injury.
I think some players are still being targeted as weak links when they have been as good as the fans favourites, Mossop has been solid and had some really good games yet still getting stick, I like Clubb yet for me he does not play enough minutes. Smith has been there to win a few games this year yet some fans would blame all the attacking issues on him.
It's positive to be close to the leaders without playing anywhere near our best rugby. Let's hope the off field issues do not affect the performance on the pitch

| Being honest it's been boring as hell and I don't think I've come away from a game yet thinking "I enjoyed that". Maybe injuries have played a part in that but other teams have managed to win, and play entertainingly with injuries.

The closest I've had to that was Good Friday. It was on the back of a skinful too like!

Recruitment
At a time of apathy in the game and on the rlforums in general a good post to start a discussion.
Personally a season I just want end.
Awful rugby with an awful management team. I'm dumbfounded at the atracious signings of the past 4 or 5 years and the inept or non existent communications to the fans which has reached new lows this year.
Boring play with guys who are robots with no known self processed thoughts. When fans think Isa is ok or even good per another post then for me it's time to move on. When people talk about D and middles I just shudder and start thinking about which bin is due out this week - is it the black bin or the blue bin?
I seriously cannot be d if we win lose or just throw out illness as an excuse for a near record defeat but still don't advise why we didn't ask for the game to be postponed. I can't help it - if someone can't be d about me then I just return the complement.
I'm not apologising for being so negative just sad that after over 50 years of support I just don't really care anymore about a sport that I used to be proud of for its honesty and it's intrinsic ability to thrill. Nowadays we have 17 guys for each team with no real discernible differences in size or expectations of skills of whom generally 20 just cannot play 80 minutes a week even though this their chosen "profession" and they allegedly have skilled professional back room staff working them to a peak of fitness.
I'm glad that young guys like you still obviously have a passion for the club but for me this is my last season as a season ticket holder and I have already decided that even if we should make any finals (which I don't think we will) I'm not going to make the effort to watch a game of chess on grass.
Obviously at the other extreme of your thoughts but hey ho it's a funny old world.

Canberra may get a player swap for Nu’uausala, with the Raiders one of several NRL clubs keen on England Test forward John Bateman.
The fiery Bateman has been dropped for the last two games amid claims he was fighting with a team-mate after a drunken trip to the races, which Wigan are still investigation.
Bateman has a clause in his contract allowing him to be released to move to the NRL.'"

Torn about this.
Would sooner he went to the NRL than RU (not that I think RU would even be an option in Bateman's case - England won the other night, so there'll be no panic-buying for a time). But I'd sooner he stayed in SL even if that meant he went to a rival club. I can't stand the thought of Scrabby-Doo (excellent name, by the way) turning out for Leeds or Warrington, but SL can't keep on shedding these quality players. The British game is star-light as it is, and though the likes of Sam have come home again, it's all quite disruptive.

The clause only allows him to move in the 2019 season.
Quote: ksm1701 "The new Contract allows John the option to play in the NRL from the 2019 season with corresponding transfer fee and return provisions to Wigan if he so chooses.

Can't think of a time over the last few years when The Mole's rumours have been inaccurate.
Putting the clause in the contract to one side, if the forthcoming disciplinary doesn't go Bateman's way, then presumably the club can decide to terminate the contract and release him to an NRL club for a fee or in exchange for Nu’uausala.

| To be honest i am not that bothered now it has all sunk in. If the said player has done what is alleged then i want him out of the club ASAP and i wouldn't care if he went to another SL club, NRL, RU or bare knuckle gypsy fighting. I don't want players like that at my club. I wanted Flower out when he did what he did but the club didn't act. Just get rid. Talent or no talent.

| I certainly wouldn't want him exchanged for F-PN, though, whom Sticky Stuart is trying to rid of anyway.
Swap one of SL's brightest talents for a clapped-out has-been? No ta!
